Plays great now that they've fixed a lot of the bugs and on a relatively high spec machine. The main quest could've been longer and more interesting, but it really shines in the side quests.

3D Realms, Triptych Games, Gearbox Software and Piranha Games really knocked it out of the park with this game. After 15 years of development hell the first true masterpiece in video games is here.
The game takes a lot of cues from modernist fiction. Much of the game is about topics such as sadness, loss, addiction, alcoholism, failure, family, mental health, morality, PTSD, fame, chaos, masculinity, spirituality and isolation. The structure of Duke Nukem Forever reinforces this and the entire game is split up into vignettes all structured like a recursive fractalic ionizing radiation symbol.
The game is set years after the first alien invasion and chronicles the post-war life of duke much in the same way the Greek dark age poem The Odyssey talks about Odysseus' struggle with post-war life and the hard transition for him. The game picks up shortly after the alien war. Duke has fallen on hard times, after an unsuccessful spout in politics, his failing business ventures leave him facing bankruptcy. The game switches then to 7 years later, duke is no longer remembered as the savior of earth and is forced into private life as a used car salesman married to a woman who doesn't love him and who is cheating on him. Duke falls into a deep depression and visions of his past haunt him at night, slowly the visions creep into the day and this vignette ends with a violent outburst in which duke believes the aliens have come back to earth.
Now it's 3 years later, duke is an a mental facility dealing with the horrors of his past. His wife has left him and he struggles with a lot of health problems in this chapter. One of the patients in the facility recognizes duke but slowly over the course of the vignette the player realizes that the patient thinks that Duke is the great king Gilgamesh a champion of masculinity from the ancient near eastern epic poem.
Duke next transition is into the desert, set only a year later duke is living on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Duke is forced into an emasculating job as a male prostitute who is forced to do disgusting acts for peanuts. Duke is slowly drinking himself to death in an attempt to kill the pain in his life. At several times during the course of this phase in his life he wanders drunk through the desert, in the last of this section Duke is lost in the desert for 40 days before reaching civilization and being tested with addiction by a strip club and gives into his desire. This section mirrors the temptation of Christ but twists the ending.
The next section takes place only 3 days later, Duke is an emasculated, mess of a man make impotent by the drink. Duke jumps off the Hoover Dam but fails and lands onto a child.
Duke wakes up in a prison hospital missing his left leg. Duke has been sentenced to life without parole for drug possession and killing the child at the end of the of previous chapter. In the hospital the doctors discover Duke has prostate cancer from the steroids duke took during his youth. Duke loses all masculinity after his surgery and develops into a fat, sexless man confined to a wheelchair. Duke yet again falls into a deep pit of depression and wants to kill himself but just can't do it. It's implied that Duke is bottom to his cell partner. Duke dreams of the aliens from Duke Nukem 3D returning and him regaining his former glory and fame. Duke wakes up and starts crying, he reflects on his life and all the paths that brought him to his current state. Duke hangs himself in his prison cell.
This game is a truly bold move for the franchise and has entered gaming into a brave new world of creativity and story telling.

This is what happens when you take the fun and open ended gameplay out of Blood money.
