Gorogoa presents you with a 4-panel grid, in which different viewports are placed. You can interact with these viewports, moving their cameras to different fixed points within the scenes they show. The viewports themselves or layers of them can also be moved between the panels and will combine with others if placed correctly. These combinations allow objects to change their behaviour or even move between scenes. Often, you’ll also have to consider the order and/or timing with which the combinations are formed.

Their solutions may not always be immediately obvious, but the game’s puzzles aren’t too hard either. Solving them certainly feels satisfying, even on repeat playthroughs. Just the way things line up and combine has a certain magic to it.

The scenes in which the puzzles take place tell a rather abstract story, which you advance with each puzzle solved. Combined with the game’s art style and sound design, this also creates a somewhat ethereal atmosphere, which can certainly get you thinking.

Essentially, you push balls of snow around within small areas consisting of grass and snow-covered tiles. The balls will pick up snow and grow, leaving behind gras which won’t increase their size when rolled over. Each puzzle requires you to use the provided balls to build a set number of snowmen by stacking a big, a middle sized and a small snow ball on top of each other.

Each snowman can be hugged, there’s benches to sit on and telescopes to overlook the maze of puzzles around you, giving the whole game a very relaxed and wholesome vibe. The way all areas are connected also comes into play after finishing the main game, which I very much enjoyed. The simplistic graphics (shoutout to the design of the monster you’re playing as) and the game’s sound design also very much complement its comforting atmosphere.

A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build is a short but certainly challenging game with a ton of charm. Very much recommended.
