Final Fantasy XVI is a game that embodies everything I hate about the modern AAA industry and the design philosophy of projects of this magnitude. It's a game that absolutely hates being a video game and not a TV series, it doesn't respect the player's time AT ALL, and it's so braindead it puts me to sleep even when I'm supposed to be playing. On top of that it runs like absolute trash.
It's filled to the brim with pointless timewasters, fetch quests, segments where you have to walk to talk to three ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to advance the main quests, filler, cutscenes that interrupt boss fights and last MINUTES. Whoever designed and pushed this stuff should be ashamed of themselves.
So i play the demo and think, well, how bad can it be? As long as they rip off Bayonetta and tell a decent story that's all they need to do really.
In practice, there's so much filler that the game could have lasted a fifth of its runtime without losing anything meaningful, and even when you FINALLY play, some miserable ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ decided that:
1) there should be invisible checkpoints in EVERY BOSS FIGHT
2) there should SEVERAL MINUTES of cutscenes interrupting any important boss fight
3) regardless of your condition, when you die and press "continue" you respawn with full HP and a full supply of potions right at the moment you died. I.E. YOU GET LUIGI'D, EVERY SINGLE TIME, WITHOUT HAVING ANY CHOICE IN THE MATTER.
4) If you go back to the main menu when you die, not only do you have to load, you're thrown a kilometer away from the boss fight, walking at a snail's pace every single time, and every single time you have to endure the same cutscenes in the middle of the fight.
Essentially, if coming from Bayonetta or Devil May Cry (because we're copying these games, no point in denying it), and I wanted to actually win the boss fights without straight up cheating by using items, every aspect of this game is mathematically calibrated to make you waste twice as much time as any other competitor in the genre. NEVER should the player be actually interested in the game and playing it well. No, no, YOU MUST move along immediately to the next cutscene, you're forced to because we'll make you want to slit your wrists if you don't.
And the story, while it starts off with a bang and almost seems like it will go somewhere interesting, after a few hours immediately pivots to the same old and trite kingdom hearts power of friendship ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with people coming back from the dead and evil alter egos.
♥♥♥♥ this game, i hated it, and i feel scammed for putting my time into this slop

the sheer amount of top-tier content crammed in this 10 euro game is astonishing, all while perfectly blending the JRPG and survival horror genres into an addictive gameplay loop. if you are at the very least intrigued by what you see, by all means buy the game, regardless of sale status. i, for one, will be keeping an EYE on the developer and LOOKING forward to new titles.

This is a very good game, it's not flawless by any stretch of the imagination, but it has a great cinematic story component, a banger soundtrack and fairly competent art direction. What holds the game back is a general lack of polish, both technical and in side content, as well as it being overly reliant on parries and dodges to the point that these mechanics end up overshadowing the other mechanics, which i find to be really fun and decently deep for the length of the main story. Solid 8/10

beat the game in two sessions of 5 and 8 hours respectively. it's a pretty good story-driven game :)
it flows a bit like a board game, with dice throws dictating your resources and the story, but i wish it was more fleshed out, especially because if you play well and complete lots of drives you'll end up maxing out your stats and the point of choosing a different character at the beginning of the game feels moot as far as replayability is concerned

Look past the heavy Risk Of Rain 2 inspiration and you will find a fascinating action roguelite experience with beautiful presentation and a gripping storyline. Phenomenal game.

The game is great, i even grinded for three full days to get to Gold 4 and start learning Juri, i EVEN bought the battle pass like an idiot, because i plan to commit to this game and grinding out kudos is not that hard.
What pisses me off is not even the battle pass (even though that's inexcusable), it's the extra mile capcom goes to screw over the consumer with the predatory monetization, like the fact you can't even buy DLC from Steam but you have to instead buy their retarded coins at set increments so that you will always have leftovers. Obviously they won't let you earn the premium currency via gameplay, because why the ♥♥♥♥ would they.
Even the DLC fighters are overpriced, costing even more than TEKKEN ones, so that's something i don't plan to buy any time soon. It's a shame because i can tell the developers really put their soul into this game, but capcom very clearly hates the player.
Hopefully things will turn for the better with time, but i can't say i expect them to.
