Edit early 2026:
Steam is saying I have played an additional 1395 hours since the last review. The math isn't mathing, but that seems about right.
It is a very relaxed game and there is a lot to do.

Original review:
You either burn out in ARR or play long enough to become a shill.
@ 900 hours.

Congratulations Sony, just because you wanted more metadata you had to ruin everyone's good time. The Devs genuinely care about this game, which is extremely rare, and even if you walk it back the damage is already done. Thanks for nothing.

EDIT: After Sony walking it back I'll do my part for Arrowhead. Democracy prevails.

EDIT for Steam Awards 2025:
Still a wonderful game, runs on Linux, and that's enough for me.

EDIT for early 2026:
This game has a major griefing problem, and the report system doesn't allow people to be reported.

This is the first game that I ever purchased on Steam. The game that holds the most playtime and is closest to my heart. Unfortunately at the time of this review, it has a rampant hacking and bot problem.
Valve has taken some recent steps towards curing said problem, but the game of cat-and-mouse that is anti-cheat may not be worth their time. Not to mention that the game hasn't been updated (save for the monthly localization file upgrade) in 3+ years.
At this stage in it's life, being over 10 years old, having an outside party handle anti-cheat might be in their best interests if they want to have such a hands-off approach.

If you truly love this game, and want to continue playing it, avoid public servers and play on Community servers. There are so many wonderful community created game modes and extra maps to play on.
Most of the bots that have infested casual leave if there are too few players to annoy and don't kill each other.
SourceMod anti-cheat works well, and admins/mods that can kick bots or IP ban accounts are readily available.

Hopefully someday we may see an end to this, good or bad, so at least the community can see closure.
The last TF comics issue and one last big update and sendoff before "We're moving on to bigger things" would be good for me.

Update for the steam awards 2023;
Even though there was an update, they still can't fix the bot problem.
Maybe someday...

Update after the #FixTF2 campaign:
They have fixed the bot problem and TF comic #7 is on the way, maybe I'm prophetic.
I will temporarily update my recommendation to Yes, given that I've had every recent game without bots and hackers.

Update after TF Comics 7:
It's over.
Thanks for all the memories.

Edit for early 2026:
Would never recommend this game to anyone, also I cannot play on Linux.
RIP real Bungie.

Original review:
From the days of waiting in orbit, listening to the soft hymnal choir, this game and it's franchise has had me locked into a love-hate relationship I cannot bear to break off.
I had 1,152 hours in the original Destiny, and before moving to Steam I had countless hours on the Blizzard launcher.
So many of them spent with good friends and on epic quests that take from an day to a month.
Bungie makes masterpieces, and this game is in a class of it's own.
