What a great game! I bought this because the art style and cutscenes are reminiscent of those crappy Zelda CD-I games, and they were absolutely amazing. The gameplay is also surprisingly good. I'm not normally a fan of metroidvanias, but I think it was done pretty well here, since the levels aren't too long. Definitely worth a shot if you're interested at all in these sort of old-school games.

Tip for anyone going for Toree S-ranks: staying in the green zone on rails allows you to kill enemies on the rails.

As for the review, if you're going through the game casually, it's an easy recommend, especially for just $5. There are some pretty cool ideas for levels too, such as the music levels where platforms and obstacles change on the beat, or the level where the music's instruments slowly come in as you collect the 3 tears. Music and art are pretty decent too.

However, if you're going for all achievements and/or all S ranks, that's more debatable. Your character seems to maintain their rail momentum until they land, which makes air control much harder, especially if you're trying to land on the same rail again. Most of this criticism doesn't apply once I figured out the trick with Toree as mentioned at the top, but there are still 2 sections that require it, and doing those levels deathless can be frustrating. The hitbox for landing on a rail seems pretty small too, and there were several moments where it felt like I clipped through the rail rather than landing back on it.

As for going for S-ranks, the achievements don't require you to get all collectibles and go deathless in the same run, but if you decide to do it for fun, the game can start getting pretty frustrating. When I was doing playthroughs with the other 2 characters, I decided to just do another separate run for a level if I died, rather than trying to go for both in the same run because it started getting annoying.

Finally...the final level for Toukie. I really did not like this. 900 collectibles is absolutely ridiculous. Also, the hardest part of the level, where you have to jump onto moving platforms, is at the very end. So trying to do this level deathless, especially since getting to the final part takes 7-10 minutes, gets annoying really quick.

One of the best co-op games I have ever played, this is seriously underrated. It's fun to pummel your enemies, and the enemy variety is pretty good. Your skills come off cooldown decently often, so you get to actually use the fun parts of your kit. Not only that, the puzzles are absolutely fantastic, and it was nice to take a break from the fighting to solve them. Some of the puzzles get meta which is super nice, and I definitely encourage you to solve them on your own.

All 4 of the characters are a blast to play with upgrades that can significantly change your playstyle. The progression is also nice, where you rank up your weapons/skills and those grant overall character buffs, so it encourages you to change up your loadout every once in a while. I played this in 2-player co-op, and the synergies between...say Meg and Triss/Erin are pretty nice. (P.S. Meg is absolutely busted in the right hands).

The only thing that I'm a bit mixed on is the colored shields. Basically, some enemies have colored bubbles that can only be broken by the player of the same color. I completely understand why they added this mechanic, since it encourages everyone to participate vs. having one really good player steamroll everything, but the implementation leaves a bit to be desired. Mainly, 1) shields come up too often, where the shield will immediately change color after hitting 1 or 2 times, and 2) characters with lower damage output like Triss kind of struggle, where you'll have to chase an enemy as a melee character that will sometimes take 3-4 hits

Other than that 1 downside, this game is absolutely fantastic! Even after finishing the main campaign, we decided to redo most of the levels as other characters to try them out, and every character feels unique and fun. It's such a shame that this game is so overlooked compared to Rogue Legacy, but I highly encourage anyone who enjoys co-op beat-em-ups and a bit of puzzle solving to get this!

The atmosphere in this game is unreal. It's just so fun to just wander around and discover the zone. However, the first couple of hours are extremely rough. The pistol just straight up sucks, and the Viper 5 isn't too much better. Once you get a rifle like an AKM though, the gunplay becomes a lot more fun. Several tips:
1. Install ZRP mod for a more stable experience (never got any crashes)
2. Headshots are always a one-hit kill. Be patient and don't spray-and-pray. Wait between shots if you can, and use cover.

Also, if you get motion sickness from this game like I did, I recommend 3 things, though it still took a couple of sessions for me to get used to it.
1. Disable head bobbing via ZRP mod's Modifier.exe
2. Install another mod to increase FOV to something like 90
3. Try to avoid sprinting and moving the camera at the same time

Early Access Review
Gunfire Reborn is a really great, well-executed FPS rogue-lite that makes me wish there were more rogue-lites like this! I spent most of my playtime in 2-player co-op, and we had a great time throughout!

Pros:
* Great rogue-lite progression between runs. It's very unlikely that you'll beat the game on your first try since some upgrades are pretty essential, but it'll make you appreciate them even more
* The 5 classes are pretty varied. Each class encourages different playstyles and favors certain weapons. I personally am a fan of the cat (specializes in elemental damage) and bird (specializes in melee/close-quarters combat).
* Class skills are awesome have short cooldowns, so you can use them really often (and you'll need to in higher difficulties!)
* Tons of scrolls to encounter during runs and ascensions (mid-run class upgrades) have 3 trees that incentivize certain playstyles and weapons
* Weapons feel pretty varied, and there's a good variety of weapons in each type that feel at least decent
* Nice variety and design of enemies and bosses, particularly in the 3rd area. Highlights include White Sharks (terrifying Roadhog-like enemies that hook you in), Nihilation Monks (also terrifying enemies that teleport to you and start life-stealing in an area), and Arrogant Lobsters (basically artillery) that encourage you to focus them down first.
* The sub-30 minute run achievements on each difficulty encourage players to experiment with speedrunning, which I appreciate!

Cons (mostly nitpicks):
* Dog feels a bit uninspired. It's literally the Gunzerker from Borderlands 2
* First stage can feel a bit tedious after many repeat playthroughs. Particular offenders are the Horseheads (basically meatshields with shields, has literally 1 attack) and Heavy Crossbowmen (very dangerous ranged enemies with homing projectiles which really slow down the pace of a room)
* Wind God is cool the first time, but gets tedious fast since he's one of the few bosses that can only be damaged from range. He's particularly annoying when going for the sub-30 min speedrun.
* Higher reincarnation difficulties in solo play feel borderline unfair. You need good luck (ascensions + weapons) in the 1st zone to even stand a chance of finishing the run. Enemies also hit super hard, and the infinite revives in co-op make solo feel pretty unbalanced.
* Magical Supply on Tiger should be a talent, not an ascension. Not having access to this ascension feels terrible.

Overall, I would recommend this game to anybody interested in roguelikes with a FPS flair. The price makes this feel like borderline a steal. I would recommend getting this before mid-October, when they plan on a price increase. Even then, I would still recommend the game to support the devs!
