A fun Doom Eternal-like with all the energy and gunplay you'd expect from Shadow Warrior. If you're a fan of Lo Wang, this will scratch that itch

Ion Fury (read: Maiden) is an excellent return to classic 90s era shooting that extends and elaborates on a tried and true approach to first person shooters: nonlinear, intuitive, and creative level design, skill-based gameplay (no recharging health here), and plenty of campy humor and secrets to get you invested in the game's unique personality and environment. Frankly speaking, the game respects your intelligence as a player. There aren't flashing objects in the distance letting you know they're important - you should get that because they're designed well enough for that to be obvious. There aren't NPC's explaining where you're supposed to go or offering hints - you can figure it out because the level isn't some gobblediegook maze that was developed by so many people that no one really understood a clear way forward. This is about natural progression, exploration, and fast-paced action. And it works. I highly recommend this game for anyone who is a fan of challenge, non-linear level design, and fast-paced action.

Amid Evil is good. As in: really good. With constantly changing environments and enemy types that are well thought out and challenging to engage, it's kept me coming back more often than I expected. There's no hand holding and plenty of history and secrets to explore. Launch planets at, chain lightning, and dismember your enemies. If you're a fan of old school games like Heretic or Hexen, give it a try. If you aren't? Also give it a try. I really think there's something here for everyone.

This game has the look of a AAA with the feel of a poorly designed mod. There's not really much gameplay to speak of besides running down nearly identical cooridors over and over again and then being surprised by a monster that you either run away from...down a corridor...or around some darkly lit areas with lighting to either show you the way or completely get you off course - which essentially turns the game into a memorization game rather than a thrilling experience. The design mentality here appears to be, "Let's lengthen gameplay by killing the player needlessly -- or by introducing multiple mechanics simultaneously when death is on the line." The other issue is the clipping, which is fairly consistent. I've fallen through the floor a bunch of times and the funniest thing about it is that a sound effect plays when it happens and you're instantly killed, so the devs knew it was an issue and never fixed it (and in unity this is pretty unforgivable. Clipping isn't rocket science). With another 6 months or so perhaps this could have been retooled and made great, beacause the concept, while not original (I'll save you the spoilers) is still compelling and cool. I can't recommend this though. Buy Monstrum if you want a thrill from a small dev. It's a much more rewarding experience.

SOME SPOILERS - but nothing beyond the first mission. While a fun game, the story is a bit muddled (the dynamic between your character adn the other big character, Erin, is at first incomprehensible..and why does Garret care so mucch about that climbing tool? Pretty big reach for character motivation. Then you use it yourself? super lame and lazy writing) and it's plagued by poor movement mechanics (particularly jumping from down from platforms...it's super irritating), too much initial hand-holding, and an excessively poor saving system. For example, when beginning chapter 3, my game did not save and upon hitting my load button to try a different method of moving around I was 10 minutes and a lot less loot behind. The game is worth a playthrough but wait until it's on sale. Also, Steam should have a wavey hand for, "eh, maybe give it a shot?" This is not a huge endorsement I'm giving. Solid B-. Thief deserves better than this game.
