As sequels go, Final Fantasy II is one of the most disappointing possible. Building off the foundations of FF1, this game focuses more on plot than its predecessor. The struggle of an early rebellion against a massive Empire is an engaging one, if done a little too simply in this case. It also begins to add staples of the Final Fantasy series into the fold, which does add some value to the game as a whole. However, the combat system is absolutely abysmal. In an attempt to allow players more freedom in how characters should be built out, FF2 forgoes a traditional XP system in favor of a Weapon XP system. In theory this is fantastic, but in practice, it makes leveling feel stilted and not satisfying. Combine that with a neat little quirk which allows enemy status effects to always hit so long as the attacks hit, and you get a frustrating experience that honestly isn't worth the time it takes to complete.

As the first in the series, Final Fantasy does not try to reinvent the wheel. Simple Turn-Based Combat, a straightforward plot, and inspiration ripped so directly from Dungeons and Dragons that most of the enemies literally come straight from the Monster Manual. A quick and easy experience to go through, even if it is a bit bland at some points throughout the play-through. The additions of the Bestiary makes grinding a bit more fun, overall helping the package along. If you are interested in the Final Fantasy series, this allows you to start at the beginning, but don't expect series staples just yet.

I wasn't sure what I was going into besides that it followed the plot lines set up from Resident Evil 7, but this game is fantastic. The initial play-through is great, and the challenge system that remains from the other games adds even more incentive to play the game all over again. I would easily say that this is a purchase, though with the shorter end of the campaign (about 6-8 hours), if you were looking for a sale, I'd say even a small sale makes this very worthwhile.
