The Idiot's Soul

I have a secret with my God
Known but to him and me;
Beyond the reach, beyond the ken,
Of human sympathy.

The living tomb that shuts me in
From all the joys of earth,
From converse with the sons of men,
From beauty, love and mirth,

Cannot shut out the quick'ning beam,
The ray of heavenly light,
The dayspring from on high that shines,
Where all beside is night;

Cannot shut out (though lone and poor)
My heavenly Father's love;
Cannot shut out the mystic cord
That draws me up above.

Though dead to human ties of earth,
The spirit God has given
May feel a still communion with
The unseen things of heaven.

I feel an untold longing here
For better things to come;
A fellowship with God's redeem'd,
And an immortal home.

The senseless form that holds me now
Will die and set me free;
But I shall live an angel bright
Through all eternity.
