I had fun with this game, but, as you might've seen from other reviews, you can't play this game without playing AI1 and AI2. You just can't. Nothing will make that much sense, there's nowhere near any time getting to know the characters. For the short play time, it was fine, but there's not much substance if you were looking for anything serious. It was made for fans who wanted to see more of the characters. (Though, they lack the development from AI1, despite the game taking place literally right after the first one.)

Honestly can't recommend this to anyone who didn't love either of the previous games in the series.

Pretty fun and simple way of making games, but with lots of room to alter the base engine via plugins. I use it all the time, but right now I can't recommend this only because it's been crashing on me for a while, now. (Windows 10) It still works fine, but a random crash can be devastating for a more serious project. If you do get this software, save often!

How could I not recommend this game? It's fantastic. As someone who has played RE0-8 now, I can say you don't have to play all of them to enjoy this title. However, I must advise that you at least play RE7 before this. It's the start of Ethan's story, and this will hit better afterwards, trust me.

In the initial game settings, you will be asked to pick a play style to be first person or third person. Do yourself a favor and keep it first person. Great for the atmosphere, and matches the RE7 vibes.

This game is like they took the best parts of all the previous installments and lovingly put it all together in this one. The village really reminds me of playing RE4, at least in the beginning. The environments are constantly changing, there's lots of treasure to backtrack and find, and the characters are unique! Also shoutout for fixing Chris's appearance versus his RE7 look. Ethan only grew as a character in this one, quickly becoming a personal favorite for being down to earth while exceedingly out of this world. My only gripe is that I'll never get to play as Ethan again without some huge retcon, RIP hero :(

Also, even if your computer is struggling with RE4R, this one runs 60 fps ez LOL

Idk where I saw people saying this game wasn't worth and to skip it, but the game was fine and worth. The main villain was whatever but I enjoyed the main duo (Rebecca and Billy) a lot, and the environment felt a lot more varied over RE1HD. Although, if you do play it, I HIGHLY recommend the item box mod. Idk how classic players managed with how much stuff you can pick up at a time.

I bought the limited edition Day 1, played through it, and then collected my thoughts for two months. I love AI1 to pieces, but NIrvana just feels... off. I'm mixed.

The Good
Everything is polished, there are fun little minigames in the menu, the music is fantastic, voice acting is once again A1.

The mystery hooks you well, everything is all over the place and that's an awesome place to start so that you can solve it bit by bit through the routes.

The simulation scenes/walking around the crime scenes is a very cool additions and most, if not all of the new characters are great.

The Bad
The characters don't feel like they're the same people from the first game. It may just be the fact that you play in Mizuki's and Ryuki's perspectives, but it is different from before.

As many others have already mentioned, the twist is... ehh. It's not really much of a payoff. You can tell that they thought it through really hard for it to work, but it doesn't come out as solving the case and more of a: "oh okay ig." Some might like it, some might not.

On the topic of the mystery, without being too specific: It basically doesn't relate to Mizuki or Ryuki except for a few forced-in bits and pieces. Anyone could've solved it, and these two are just running around while the case solves itself.

The Ugly
What truly gets to me isn't the twist, or even the personalities of the old characters. It's the fact that so many suspects from the first game show up in this game. AINI was advertised as containing no spoilers for the first game, but idk man. Imagine seeing them here and then going back to play the first game? It isn't hard to figure out.

Things I personally liked:
  • Ryuki and Tama's relationship. They work well and can be hilarious.
  • Kusemon.
  • Shoma Route. Honestly so heartwearming.

Things I personally disliked:
  • Making Mizuki not only adopted, but being genetically modified for her super strength. Great, now Renju is ruined, Mizuki isn't freakishly strong for funsies (which I found hilarious), the Mizuki route from AI means less, I could go on.
  • Just making Date casually disappear for 6 years because he got amnesia again. My man's now 48 and has nothing to show for it. He literally aged 18 years in ~3 months.
  • The final confrontation. (Both with Naix and Amame) It's a bit too out there for this world. Also Amame suddenly being too relevant is kind of ehh.

Something to note:
The routes in this game are more streamlined than the first. There is still somewhat of a butterfly effect, but not as much as in the first game. While I prefer the extreme butterfly effect from the first game, I have no problem with a streamlined story either as long as the mystery is banger. Just thought I'd give a heads-up.

Overall
If you're coming from the first game, it's up to you. Just understand that it's very different from the first game. If you're new to the series, I highly recommend the first game before this one.
