Helldivers 2 is a game unlike most of the modern trends in gaming, and one that breathes fresh air into the genre.

The good:
Gameplay: The game is a fast paced third person shooter much like a horde game except there are various mission types and difficulties. Some missions play almost like tower defense missions, others involve navigating a decently sized area of wilderness destroying enemy outposts and completing secondary objectives. The game offers a wide range of engaging mission types, keeping things from being too repetitive. Its worth saying that despite the bugs ill touch on later, the game is still worth playing.
Customization: You can customize quite a bit from you character's armor and appearance to your load-outs. Stratagems keep things fresh allowing you to mix up your build for the mission and bringing something unique to the table. Even seemingly limited or situational things can often times be useful in the chaos of combat.
Style: The game definitely parodies B-movie science fiction in all the best ways. A game about pure fun with no modern day current event or modern audience contrivances. Pure and simple fun with a completely unabashed focus on gameplay and minute to minute violence.

Cons:

Bugs: This game does have a number of bizzare and mission breaking bugs. Issues with lobbies joining, Missions glitching out, controls remapping without warning, respawns glitching. those are just a few issues i ran into playing. The game itself seems to run about as smoothly as missions go.

All in all aside from the bugs that at times border on hilarious as much as they are frustrating, the game is still absolutely worth your time. With a developer as dedicated to feedback this game is already well worth the price of admission, i can only imagine that value will increase as the developer has more resources to put towards the game.

I'm doing my part, are you?

Theres a lot to say about this game. Initially i had some difficulty, until i figured out how to rebind the controls. however once i did the game plays uniquely. Compared to Ace Combat 7 it does not control as tight, nor does it look as good inm areas like clouds, smoke effects, and minor graphical bugs bounced out at me. It clearly is not as polished as the experience that project Aces is known for. If this game was a 1 for one attempt at cloning the experience it would merely be mediocre.

Thankfully it doesnt.

The early few missions were kind of weak, and with an unfamiliar setting i had difficulty grasping onto it. by the 4th mission or so though, i found a game that paid homage to the genre but it had enough of its own dna to feel fresh and distinct. It delivered better in some ways than ace combat did, reminding be strongly of the belkan war, and ace combat 5/ while managing to bring an emulation of 6s large scale battles.

If you arent a fan of the genre it may take some getting used to but its a rewarding experience, that goes from a walk to a nonstop sprint. The setpiece large air battle being the greatest ive ever experienced. Putting experiencess like Comona rocket base to paltry shame.

There were times where i was sweating and out of breath by the end of the game. it was a worthy reprisal of the feelings i had playing the old "holy trinity" of ace combat games without feeling stuck in the past. it took the right lessons from Ace combat 4, 5, and zero.

The musical score makes a serious attempt at reaching the heights and bar the namco sound team set. the soundtrack at times exceeding. Frankly i dont think i can praise this game highly enough.

The minor issues with the game are quickly overshadowed by what it does right. In a genre starved for content it strikes a balance better than any attempts ive seen outside of the heyday of the Ace combat series. The only major issues i had were the way the story was handled in the beginning and the ending. i felt an epilogue to hammer home what you accomplished would have been the cherry on top. though even without the garnish its a damn good sundae.

Now to wait for a sequel or expanded campaign. I would gladly buy more of this.

theres a steep learning curve however the game rewards mastery of both its customization and it's combat system.

I strongly reccomend looking into mecchs before buying them, though most can be surprisingly effective in the right hands. Comms are important so i reccomend a headset, thankfully most pilots are willing to help newer players figure out the mechanics. This is not a twitch shooter, though mech game purists may hate the way some weapons and systems function, it is very tactical, and requires forethought not only in the build of the mech and how to kill enemies but positioning too. you can get destroyed without really being your fault, but sometimes you just get drawn into a bad engagement.

my pointers. R key on keyboard is target lock. necessary for homing weapons and to spot for friendly indirect fire. if you are shooting at it you should be locked on.

after a short periot of time a display showing the enemy's staus appears. it will tell you what sections are damaged, and you can target for them. he got a big ass gun thats gonna kill you dead? focus fire on that component and blow it off. need to escape or slow someone down? kneecap em.

Under fire? twist and shout. i swear to god the dumbest thing you can do when being shot at is letting them easily pick off your weapons. Turn them away from incoming fire between weapon volleys. make em work for it. ultimately i always find myself coming back.

Bag throwing simulator 2013 is a wodnerful game for several reasons. At first glance one might be tempted to call them out for shilling dlc, and bleeding their customers for money. I would agree if they werent investing the moeny back into the game.

Overkill's attitude is integral to the sucess of this game, and it is half the reason why i love it. They remind me of how some of the older studios used to run things.

As far as it goes, it is a well put together game with a smaller price tag than some. at 30 dollars i find what you get out fo the box acceptable. You ndont even need the dlc to play the extra missions as long as a friend of yours has them, Also the constant release of free characters and other events allows for expansion even if you arent sinking extra moeny into the game. The trilers and amrketing around the game are very polished and in many ways part of the experience. Watch the hoxton breakout trailer and tell me you wouldnt watch an hour and a half movie made by these guys.

The release of dlc is in many ways a blessing as the game continues to expand and add more to itself, including adding characters, heists, and even enemies based on their community. (the cloaker, old hoxton, and the death wish difficulty were only added because of fan support.) As long as they continue to put out quality, for a reasonablwe price i am happy to continue to support it.

8.5/10
