I did not play this in 2002. I started with Oblivion late, then got Skyrim. I have no nostalgia for this title. After playing many hours in all 3, over different consoles, this has ended up as my favorite.

I enjoy Morrowind over Skyrim because of the better RPG aspects and the fact that they are not afraid to let you fail a quest or kill an important NPC.
Oblivion is slightly less in my opinion because the tech was not ready for their vision. The terrible faces, the awful inter-NPC dialog, the floaty animations and combat, etc. They didn't even attempt these things in Morrowind and has allowed it to age much better.
Now there are things like, NPCs don't have schedules or bed times, the combat is RNG, and there is more reading than voice acting, but I still love it all. These can also be modded to your liking.

There is also something about the engine that allows for more advanced modding to include multiplayer. Not even basic multiplayer, but the type where one could host a server and have 64 people in the game all doing their own quests and such. I play with friends and it is very well done.

Highly recommended all around.
