This game is older than me and yes visually it's very dated now. I understand that there are more mods for this game for all kinds of things from graphics to bug fixes and quests. I've been playing the vanilla game as it was intended and I'm enjoying it so much. It doesn't hold your hand at all and this is exactly why it's hooked me in.

The game world is awesome. Vvardenfell seems genuinely alien when compared to many other fantasy themed RPGs with giant mushrooms things, ash storms, strange cultures, and factions that don’t revolve around you. You’re not the center of the universe here, you're just a nobody. You’re just dropped in with some rudimentary character creation and expected to figure things out.

There are no quest markers to speak of. You'll be finding your way around using directions that are written like actual directions (“head north past the river") etc, which sounds annoying I guess, but ends up making exploration feel real. When you do find something, it feels earned.

Combat is the weakest part. Early on especially, it can feel like you’re missing hits for no reason and it's frustrating as hell. That is until it clicks and you understand how skills and dice rolls work. It's a strange mechanic to me, but I don't dislike it now. Movement feels slow at the start and animations are very stiff. The UI is the most clunky of clunky things ever yet it still manages to be better than a lot of modern RPG games. It just feels less scripted and more believable.

Even full price this game isn't expensive, so if you've just moved here from another planet and have never heard of this game I recommend you play it. This will also run on the most basic setups too.

One of the best RPGS I've played. The only problem is that the controls are kind of dated. But this is only, really a problem for the first hour or so. So with that aside there isn't really any problem with how fun the game is and people should really give it a try not just for 20 minutes.
