A overemotional review of RDR2
((NOT SPOILER FREE))
I rarely ever review games on Steam - not out of a lack of love or care, I just often don't have the energy but I had to say something for this game. I'm no stranger to games emotionally impacting me but I was wholly unprepared for the experience that would befall me when I booted up the game for the first time. I'd asked for it on whim as my very kind friend was wondering what I wanted for my birthday (they tend to buy things off people's Steam wishlists). I put RDR2 on there as a sort of "Eh why not. Might as well." as I'd heard good things - I love cowboys and I thought it'd be fun.

Fun it most certainly was and still is, even on a second play-through (which I find is rare). Even in games I adore, there are parts on replays that drag a little and I'm just waiting for it be over but given the roller-coaster that is the initial play-through of the story, I was quite happy to lay back and ♥♥♥♥ around with Arthur on a replay. And that's not to say a replay of the game is lacking in excitement or content. There's still more than enough to do. The hunting aspect alone could fill its own game. But that is jumping the gun a little.

The game is, putting it mildly, big. And by the time I'd gotten at least 20 hours into the game and seen the story completion at a very small percentage, the sudden task of the game I'd taken on dawned on me. Clearly, I was in it for the long haul - and indeed it is a long haul. But it earns every damn second of its playtime. As I said, I'm not new to games having an emotional impact on me but this felt unreal and almost incomparable to other experiences. I wasn't just playing Arthur, I was in every aspect, him. I felt every relationship as if it were my own, every loss and betrayal wounded me in a way that I imagine it did to Arthur. I felt as if I could feel all those damn years wasted on Dutch and with the gang - even though the player isn't present before the story taking place. And perhaps to an outsider (or even someone who played the game and didn't connect as much to it) it may seem silly to feel a video game's story and characters so deeply but what is art if it doesn't emotionally effect us? However that may be. That's exactly what this game is. Art

I was so taken with the story that when the time for the final missions came, I found myself dreading even finishing them. It was obvious that whatever lay ahead. nestled away in Beaver Hollow, would not be a happy ending. My stomach was genuinely turning and with tears building in my eyes, I led Arthur on that final ride back to camp.
And I was right, the ending I got (high honour, helping John) was wholly unpleasant. Not because it was bad or poorly done. No, it was just so emotionally devastating that I felt like crawling onto my own cliff edge and facing the sunrise. I knew by chapter 3 that this story would be an eventual gut punch but Jesus CHRIST, I wasn't expecting for it to end in as many tears as it did.
Just as Arthur did, I felt I had given it all I had.

If you've made it this far into the review and not gotten bored by my inane ramblings (hi), I feel I should give a proper verdict. If it wasn't painfully clear, I adore this game and while this review so far has been more story focused, I did genuinely enjoy the game-play. It's not the most difficult game I've ever played (and that's how I tend to like my more story focused games), but I think there is room to make the game more difficult for yourself if you're seeking that. It's a gorgeous game and I tend to get lost in staring at and exploring the world that's been laid out for you to immerse yourself in (snapping a few pretty screenshots along the way). The music is also very good, fitting the emotional moods and at it's best - making an already sad moment just that bit more devastating. So far, I haven't encountered any bugs that were very noticeable - the odd floating horse here or there but nothing out of the ordinary for a game of this size. In fact, everything ran surprisingly well for as much content as this game holds.

No game is perfect, of course not but if you're looking for an experience, a ride that's just as wild as its setting, then this is the game for you. It's got heartbreak, humour and as many equally heartwarming moments as there are heart shattering ones. And of course, plenty of blood-pumping cowboy action. I think I'm going to spend my replays annoying Micah and Dutch to the best of my abilities - y'know, as payback for my first play-through.
Happy travels cowpoke.

I love this game a lot! I find it very enjoyable, the graphics are great and the voice acting is fantastic. There are bugs but overall it hasn't affected my enjoyment (Though it might for others). I love the animation of all the npcs and your character. Also the music is amazing and I frequently listen to the make believes on spotify. The aesthetic of the game is perfect, I love the environments. I also find this game quite funny at times and I enjoy the tone of the game a lot. For me the gameplay feels smooth, I really like the combat system, crafting is fun and while I had some trouble with inventory management at the start, the pocket expansion kit quickly solved that. My only annoyance is the saving system, I wish I could reload autosaves but I don't believe I can and thats caused some issues (If I am wrong, feel free to correct me). This has quickly become one of my fav games and I highly recommend it!
