The Varangian Guard was an elite unit of Byzantine Army, whose members served as personal bodyguards to the Byzantine Emperors. The Guard was composed primarily of Norsemen, Rus and Anglo-Saxons. They were prominent in the defense of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. As early as 911, Varangians are mentioned as fighting as mercenaries for the Byzantines. Their fierce prowess in battle led them to end up in some of the most powerful armies of the Mediterranean world.
