Few hours in, here are my initial thoughts.

As most people have been saying, the UI really needs work. Not even that it's plain, but numbers aren't centred where they should be, or are slightly cut off, or text doesn't match the other text consistently.

The leaders and Civs you pick seems like a fun mechanic, but will take some getting used to. Before, if I saw a Caesar, I know what the bonuses and unique units/buildings would be. Now I have to figure out both leader bonuses and nation bonuses.

The changing of ages is very jarring. I wish you could put off an age change, especially if you're the one that causes it.

Also, saving the game doesn't save it in the state you left it in. It saves it from the start of the turn. So if you do some stuff then save, you have to do it again when you load the save.


Overall, I am having a lot of fun so far. 7/10.

This is the first game I have refunded on Steam, ever.

This could be a good game, but it's held back by performance, micro-transactions, and backwards game design.


Regarding performance, it was playable for me, but would fluctuate between 20-60 fps. I didn't even reach any heavily populated areas. I have a decent rig, although it is aged at this point.

The micro-transactions are super scummy. While they are all things you can get in game, from what I understand, you have to grind for them, which can take an unnecessarily long time. Also, why are things like changing your look or fast travel locked behind these items you have to grind or pay money for anyways? This is very obviously a test bed to see just how much Capcom can get away with charging money for.

Then there's the save file. Who in their right mind would make it so you can't start a new game? Who thought that was a good idea? Yes, I am aware there is a current work around with deleting the actual file itself and turning off cloud saves. This should not be needed, and there is no guarantee this will work in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if this also triggers the anti-cheat and then you're SOL.

Some of the excuse I've seen from people trying to defend Capcom are hilarious. Things like the micro-transactions are optional, or that that's how the first game was. That doesn't make it okay though.

I did actually enjoy the bit of the game I could play before I decided to refund. However, I cannot support this game in this state. Maybe down the line with some updates and a sale I will try again, but it was definitely not worth the $120 I paid for the Deluxe Edition initially.

Say NO to the new auction system.

Just posting this as NerdCubed made me aware that they are trying to ban modding. Take Two is really going to screw themselves by doing that.
