The Sprint in the Lands Between.
FromSoftware has always specialized in the marathon—the slow, deliberate, punishing journey across sprawling worlds. With Elden Ring Nightreign, they’ve done the unthinkable: they’ve turned the Lands Between into a 45-minute sprint. This spin-off is a high-stakes, co-op focused rogue like that successfully boils down the core, visceral combat of Elden Ring into a thrilling, repeatable, and deeply frustrating package. The game takes the foundational elements of the 2022 masterpiece—its incredible combat engine, its vast arsenal of weapons, and its horrific menagerie of monsters—and reshapes them around a run-based structure. Players select one of eight distinct "Nightfarer" classes and drop into the limited region of Limveld, racing against the encroaching "Night," a storm that shrinks the playable area, similar to a battle royale. This frantic pace is the game's core innovation and greatest success. Instead of cautious exploration, you must make snap decisions: which objective to clear for powerful loot, which randomized Night Boss to challenge, and when to cut your losses and race toward the finale. It forces improvisation and teamwork, demanding quick thinking that is an antithesis to the measured pace of the original game. Where Nightreign truly shines is as a cooperative experience. Designed primarily for a squad of three, the game's brutal difficulty is mitigated by the ability to coordinate attacks, manage the map timer, and, crucially, revive fallen teammates. Playing with friends who communicate well creates an exhilarating loop of shared triumph and sudden, hilarious failure. However, this co-op focus is also the game's most glaring flaw. The experience is brutally unbalanced for solo players, who receive slightly scaled-down enemies but lack the essential safety net of a revival, often leading to a single mistake erasing 40 minutes of hard-fought progress. For anyone hoping to enjoy this title as a single-player Souls experience, the frustration will quickly outweigh the fun. Despite the repetitive map layout, the gameplay loop remains fresh thanks to two elements: randomized loot and brand-new boss fights. Each run offers different combinations of weapons, spells, and "Relics"—passive perks that can transform your character's capabilities, sometimes leading to god-tier, synergy-fueled builds. Finding that perfect combination of a rare weapon and a game-changing relic is the dopamine hit that keeps the loop going. Furthermore, the true challenge lies in the new "Nightlords," bespoke bosses created specifically for this title. These encounters are spectacular, fast-paced, and rank among some of the best that From Software has ever designed, providing a worthy ultimate test at the end of a successful run. In conclusion, Elden Ring Nightreign is a spectacular co-op success story built on the shoulders of giants. It’s an uncharacteristically frenetic and fast-paced game that successfully infuses the satisfying depth of Elden Ring combat with the addictive randomness of a rogue like. If you have a dedicated squad, this game is an absolute must-play and offers hundreds of hours of thrilling, challenging content. If you are predominantly a solo player, however, be prepared for a frustrating and poorly balanced experience that often feels like a missed opportunity. It is a brilliant, albeit specialized, party game—the Lands Between's definitive night out. Verdict: 10/10 (For a co-op squad)Verdict: 9/10 (For solo players)

This is a tough game. There are times when you've got to play hurt, when you've got to block out the pain.

The easiest way to win is just to pull out both of your big toes and start mashing those keys. What can I say, it's a good workout.
