DS2 ended up being the last game of the trilogy for me, meaning that I unfortunately experienced a massive downgrade to what I felt were simply superior mechanics in not just DS3, but also DS1.

Having been aware of some of the oddities that exist in DS2, I avoided the pains caused by them by prioritising the acquisition of skills/items that help combat these issues. Even then, this did not help with my overall enjoyment of the game. The gameplay felt clunky, inconsistent, and unfair (ganks and ambushes my beloved). Level design felt claustrophobic, and uninspired. Apart from Majula and maybe Drangenleic, there are no awe-aspiring views in this game. No majorly impressive architecture, and disappointing boss rooms occupied by equally uninspired bosses.

The DLCs were rather... disappointing? They somehow manage to at times have even worse level design than the main game. The only worthy mention is The Crown of the Old King. The two major boss fights, if we ignore the copy & paste smelter demon, were quite fun and I felt that it was a glimpse at what combat in DS3 would become.

Unfortunately not much I can say in terms of positives. I do think DS2 is worth a play through as part of the trilogy, but I can't find any good reason to wholly recommend this game as it wouldn't stand on its own.

Frustratingly good and deeply rewarding. Absolute masterpiece complimented by amazing OST and visuals.
