After 26 hours of game play I will say this game is either not ready for release or they have made a terrible mistake with the "soft reset" in between ages.

Copying Humankind in this regard was a huge mistake for many of us traditional Civ players. Why would you do this? Also the settlements get reverted back to gold purchasing after they were converted to production??? Why??

The depth and richness of a Civ 7 is terribly low, at least for now it is. The game seems "to easy" to play now? Very little thought is required, almost no planning and simply no fun...

Most importantly too is the lack of more ages, perhaps more will be added in the future but it feels so limited and quick for now.

The cost is also a bit much and so much content is blocked behind a money wall. This is a great way to loose current Civ players and most importantly, not be attractive enough to new ones.

I rank this game 3/10 for now.
If they can fix/change how the game actually plays and works... then maybe I will change my mind. For now the game is not recommended and very lack luster.
A terrible shame for the Civ franchise. =(

UPDATE - 11/25/25
With the latest patches and more content I have to say the game is better than at launch.
Some minor tweaks can still be added/adjusted but it is way better not than before.

While this is an interesting game to play with friends... it does get old quickly.
I thought about how or what can be done to make this a more enjoyable game but it seems that no matter what, you will always be able to re-log your character in and out of the game to stock up on you supplies.
So there is no "real" reason to try and survive or even explore much of the game since it is so easy to always be stocked up...

I have had this game since it launched but did not play very often...
Over the years I have seen some nice changes and some poor ones too...
Overall I have to say it is a great FPS that is hardcore!
Unfortunately we all know that many websites offer cheats and hacks for this game and to many players choose this path...
If all the cheaters can somehow be removed from the player base, this would be in my opinion at least, one of the top 5 best ever shooters!
I would still recommend this game to all who have the hardcore FPS itch.

Well made and designed game overall.
Lots of stuff to do early on and mid to end game.
Make sure to make many alt toons as you will need them.
I enjoy the mix of genres they have and the look and feel of the game overall, including PvP.
It will become a grind eventually but it is a relatively enjoyable grind, at least for a while.
New content seems to be added on a regular basis and this is great!

Even with all the changes/updates/fixes and season... this game lacks luster and any kind of longer term play. I would still say it is a failure considering AGS is NOT a small company with limited resources.
The PvE is beyond boring, the PvP is extremely unbalanced and laborious to play... You have to fight someone for a few minutes sometimes just to have a chance to defeating them or they you. The amount of armor/health/consumables/animation cancels/macros and even hacks that are being used in PvP is hard to describe and even harder to understand... why AGS why?
The player base continues to dip lower and lower, true that with the new season release players come back but they don't stay for much longer than a few weeks and they are gone again... this is not sustainable in the long term. Perhaps AGS does not consider or care about the long term??? Who knows... and most would say who cares...
The only silver lining I have found so far are the people who play and friendships we have created together... if it was not for this one thing... I know that 90% of us (our company) would not be playing much if at all.

Not to mention... but I will mention it anyway ... lol... we are waiting for other games to come out.
So... No, I would not recommend this game still.

So after playing the re-release of new world... I would still not recommend this game. In short, the game is exactly the same with minimal changes that will feel old in a month or two... for many players they are already done with the "new" stuff. So still a dead MMO.

Excellent game! The world and effects in the world are stunning.
If you are into building, this is the game to play for sure and the water is the best I have seen in any game before.
Much more fun with friends as you may need help in some areas.
I have not tried any of the mods out yet but I do hear some of them are very nice and add to the richness of the game.

After playing Hood for over 100 hours now I can say this…

CONS:
1. The game needs much work to fix bugs and net code issues that are a constant pain and make the game unplayable if you want a serious competitive style of play.

2. Content is minimal in the sense that there is not much to do other than the same thing over and over again. This Needs more game modes and maps that are drastically different than what is currently available.

3. The game in its initial form when it launched seemed to be more balanced than the newer changes that recently were patched in. Some elements of the game that were supposed to be patched were not or seem not to work despite the developers saying it has been “fixed”.

4. Matchmaking has serious issues… takes way to long and the teams are often very unbalanced.

5. As mentioned before the coding for this game needs to be much tighter. Example: When you have multiple players converging in on one target – NPC or Player - the game has to use RNG, or so it seems so, to choose which of the players gets the hit on the target and which do not. The problem is that on everyone’s personal screen/monitor it seems that they are all the first to make contact but in reality, that does not happen. When this happens it also creates a lag spike for all who are engaged in this action.

6. Not at all close to being good enough for tournament play… Some of the steam community players recently had a tournament and I was watching some of the games live and the practices live on twitch and also listening in the voice. What I heard from apposing teams was pretty much the same issues during the matches. All of it had to do with bugs and the above-mentioned issues.

7. Cross-platform may also be one of the largest contributing issues the game has to deal with also.

PROS:
1. Most of the community on steam seems to be cool and I have met some good players.
2. The game is fun to play with your friends.
3. The concept is also very cool but needs more to reach its full potential.
4. Battlepass and some new content is promised… so we will see how it all pans out.

Over all I would not buy this game until it was on sale at a 50% reduction in price at least.

So far the game is brilliant! Looking forward to the new content to see how it further expands the characters abilities.

I like the fact that they keep adding more to the game. It provides enough time in between games to try the different features/civs out and it feels fresh.

In general, I do wish that the mod folks can have more flexibility to create mods that give the game a more unique feel when playing them.

Perhaps a game mode where future and currently non existent civs are created to try out? That could be really cool...

Just an overall fun game with some fast paced action at times. Nice work on the water and the ship combat! Really fun with 2 or 3 crew members.

I just want to add to this review of how amazing the water and over all gfx are in this game. Nicely done with the UT engine!

As I play more I am finding out some cool new tricks and so many more adventures to play in this game. The constant updates are excellent.

Loads of fun and excitement with friends and foes alike! I love how each ship has its advantages and disadvantages, this way everyone can be compete and have a chance of getting away or sinking a ship.

Compared to other pirate games I have played, this one is more fun, has more general content, and is always adding new content.
