A nice, beautiful game with a variety of characters, a wonderful build craft and a hero upgrade branch.
The levels are well done, the music is great, the bosses are moderately strong and unique, the artifacts and complicators of the game are also well done.
I would like to have more missions besides the daily tasks that are performed just when you are playing.

Dune: Awakening. Funcom has managed to capture the spirit of the "Dune" universe while preserving an atmosphere of danger, intrigue, and power struggle. Arrakis turned out to be alive, beautiful and at the same time deadly — every grain of sand breathes history.

From the very first minutes, attention to detail is felt: from the sound of an approaching sandworm to the architecture of transport. The mechanics of survival really make you think: you need to constantly monitor water supplies, avoid open spaces during corriolis storms, and carefully plan each outing.

Separately, I would like to mention the character development system through mentors: the choice between a Soldier, a Mentant, a Planetary scientist, a Swordmaster or a Bene Gesserit really affects the style of the game. The political component with the Atreides and Harkonnen factions adds depth to the game, and the ability to influence the fate of the server is a powerful hook for a long—term game.

What I liked:

- The beautifully crafted world of Arrakis.
- Balance between survival, construction and combat mechanics.
- Interesting story quests that are organically woven into the gameplay.
- Mechanics of outposts where you can trade and sell your belongings among other players.

What can be improved:

- Sometimes there is an imbalance between classes, but developers are actively working on patches.
- I would like to see more variety in the building elements.
- PVP mode is not fully operational, it is impossible to survive immediately as in "Rust".
- It is unclear how to go through the plot with friends, in fact, all the tasks are done to complete them solo.

Result:
Dune: Awakening is an ambitious and very atmospheric MMO capable of dragging on for dozens or even hundreds of hours. Fans of "Dune" and those who are tired of cliched survival games will especially like it.

After finishing the game, I’m ready to share my thoughts. This review includes spoilers and is influenced by personal bias, so take it with a grain of salt.

Graphics / Art Direction
I’d easily give this a perfect 10. The visuals are stunning, thanks to the combination of a triple-A budget and Unreal Engine 5. Some players have pointed out the use of stock assets in the environments, but it didn’t really bother me as long as they fit seamlessly into the world. The first three chapters feature some of the most impressive biomes and architecture. If I remember correctly, the developers used 3D scans of historical buildings to recreate them in the game, which was a refreshing change from the typical Western AAA style. The animated mini-series tied to each chapter was also an unexpected but fantastic touch, giving the game a distinctive artistic identity.

Story / Plot
For those unfamiliar with Journey to the West, the story might feel disjointed and hard to follow. I get that—each chapter feels like its own separate narrative, which can be confusing. Even for fans of the original novel, the plot can still feel perplexing. That’s because the game is only loosely based on the classic tale. The developers took some creative liberties, pulling from a modern novel called Wu Kong as well as their own Journey to the West MMO. The result is a much darker, grittier version of the story, and the meaning behind it is open to interpretation. My only hope is that future installments can weave the various chapters into a more cohesive narrative.

Combat / Gameplay
The combat needs to be split into two parts: the Monkey King’s abilities and everything else. The protagonist’s move set is quite limited, and while some weapons offer slight variations, there’s not a lot of depth to the combat. It starts to feel repetitive after a while. There are some builds that combine spirits with gear, but the overall variety leaves much to be desired.

On the other hand, the enemy design is fantastic. Despite a few re-skins, most enemies have their own unique moves and animations. There are 55 mini-bosses and 26 main bosses, totaling 81, which is a deliberate nod to the 81 tribulations in Journey to the West. Interestingly, there are also 81 achievements in the PC version. My favorite boss fight was the final showdown with Wu Kong, with Erlang coming in a close second. The level of love and detail in these battles, especially for fans of the 1986 Journey to the West TV series, is amazing. The final fight is easily one of the best in recent memory, and it alone carries Chapter 6, which would otherwise feel a bit bland due to lackluster level design. I’m probably biased here because of the nostalgia, but it’s a standout moment.

Overall
I’d give the game an 9 out of 10. It’s a strong first attempt at a AAA title, even though there are areas that need improvement. A game doesn’t have to be perfect in every aspect to be great. The storytelling, for example, doesn’t quite match the brilliance of the art direction. If the developers are aiming for a boss-focused ARPG, they’ll need to refine some elements, like the invisible barriers in both level design and combat, and add more depth to the combat system to create a better balance between all elements of the game.
