If you are someone who is willing to grind hard and push past obstacles in order to get value out of their time, buy this game. DO NOT, however, buy this game if you are looking for a peaceful PvE survival experience. You should also make sure that you either:

A. have a well-established group of friends who are willing to all put their fair share of time into the game.
OR
B. are willing to join a group of strangers and openly communicate with them.

Does this apply to you? If so, the review below shouldn't have to influence you anymore. Go ahead and buy it.

Tree of Life is a Runescape-esque MMORPG with a heavy emphasis on what sets it apart from its competitors - Clash of Clans style base building and defense in an open factions world. It boasts over 15 different skillpaths, the ability to create
massive guilds with up to 30 members, and medieval-style PvP. Overall, my experience with this game has been good, but that doesn't mean I dont have my gripes with it.

This game is not, will not, and cannot be, without major fundamental changes, a singleplayer PvE game. Though it is technically an option, you're guaranteed to not have fun unless you have less than 80 IQ and enjoy weeks of braindead WORK (not play) plus a hard limit (6 maxed out skills) on what you can do with one character.

IN ORDER FROM BEST ASPECTS TO WORST:

I experienced this game with a small guild of 4 regular players including me. With each of us taking up different skillpaths and investing similar amounts of time into the game, we had a great deal of fun for about 100 hours, when it got too hardcore even for the few of us seasoned MMORPG players. We were able to organize and participate in a huge raid consisting of players from different guilds, which I consider one of the highlights of my time playing. Moments like these lead me to believe that Tree of Life is a game that strives on large groups / communities. Guilds aren't called guilds for no reason. When you max out yours with 30 people, they feel and work like, well, guilds.

Like every other review on this page says, the game has a great amount of potential. At the moment, I don't see the devs taking any risks while they try to satisfy the community, fresh off the game's 1.0.0 release, but I do believe it's a future possibility. Though many of the people I've talked to have said that the devs are loose cannons, I was able to observe them add guards to the newbie areas after backlash. It seems like a step in the right direction to listen to the playerbase.

Soundtrack is pretty good. It's nutty at times, but it definitely fits the aesthetic and adds positively to the game.

I have no problems with the PvP mechanics. Tree of Life embraces its simplistic, Minecraft-esque combat with just enough aspects to make it interesting. I do have a problem, however, with the weaponskills. Every weapon has a special effect, but in the end they all deal the same damage. Other than that, spears don't even hit enemies and bows do little to no damage at all.

Game progression seems and feels clunky. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I'm guessing it has to do with some skills requiring a disproportionate amount of work compared to others.

Considering the abnormally high amount of firewood needed to do anything, literally everyone that plays will get their Logging level to 50, which they will, in turn, need. Even after this happens, cutting down trees will still take too long to account for how much wood you require. Logging (and by extension Mining) should simply be removed from the game, instead having trees be affected by how strong your weapon is.

The game's optimization is terrible. Even though I think the game's graphics are, in their simplicity, refreshing, I do not think that I should be getting 25 FPS in the beginner area with all settings on low on a GTX 765M. The game is not Early Access anymore. There are no excuses.

If you're an avid MMORPG fan with a good group of friends, or if you're willing to make a few new ones, Tree of Life will definitely pan out to be an interesting and unique experience. Did this game frustrate and bore me at parts? Yes, but they say that negative things impact you two times as much as positive things, and despite that I came out remembering my positive experiences much more vividly.

6/10

This is a review based around the Reboot server. Reboot was one of the major goods the Nexon did to this game, and it was an update big enough to bring the community back to life in its last dying breaths. Nexon America, notorious for focusing only on pushing out content and collecting as much profit as possible, rose above and listened to the community for the first time in a while. They finally addressed the fact that their game was heavily pay-to-win based. I do agree that it was rather scummy to save this as a last resort instead of doing it earlier, but the fact remains that they did it, even at the risk of losing money.

Reboot is a GMS server different from all the others, in that the only items you can buy using real money are purely cosmetic, aside from pets. Pets are definitely needed for fast grinding of mesos in the late-game, but even they can be earned by killing Hilla, a mid-game boss.

MapleStory will always hold a place in my heart, even long after I leave. Through the layers of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Nexon coated the game in, there's a genuinely good game with an expansive world and a great community. I was long gone and done with the regular servers but Reboot brought me and tens of thousands of other players back, allowing everyone an equal oppurtunity.

We can even see now that Nexon is slowly beginning to address bugs and balance issues. In recent patches, Nexon was also able to add new content that was meaningful and well made, while also balancing characters and fixing bugs. They also give out items if ever they make mistakes that mislead players or affect gameplay, fixing it right away as well.

I have many other things to say about the game, but I think everything beyond what I've said so far is purely subjective and will be up to the player whether or not they like it.
