Soul Touch — the FMV that truly touches the soul

December arrived and with it came this more-than-unexpected gem that made its mark in the FMV world.

I wasn’t expecting much, but this game really won me over with a very strong, unique personality and technical quality without the usual flaws you see in average FMVs.

If you want a more intimate romance with a touch of fantasy, I’d definitely recommend this game.

In this game you meet 3 girls and start a story that explores the good and bad moments of each of them while something supernatural is going on...

⏱️ Playtime
First playthrough: ~ 4 hours

🎧 Technical Highlights

🎵 Soundtrack – Very good and always fits the scenes. There are some tracks I really liked, especially when it leans into jazz/soul, and none of them sounded weird or “AI-like” enough to bother me.

🎬 Cinematography – Very good. The overall image quality leaves nothing to be desired, and the scenes have a nice variety of locations. Things are more intimate here – not huge or epic places, but cozy spaces that fit the story. Considering the game’s price and its goals, it works really well.

👥 Characters – Fantastic. This is where the choice to have only 3 main characters really paid off. This is a delicate part of production, because they needed to get both the casting and each character’s story right, or everything else would fall apart. Thankfully they nailed it, and the result is a deeper emotional impact than usual for an FMV that only has a few hours and more main characters.

🌍 Localization – Very good. Easy to understand overall. Some parts of the interface are still in Chinese, but it didn’t really hurt my gameplay. I only had one scene where the text was in Chinese and that did get in the way a bit, but it was just that one.

If you’re on a tight budget and love FMV games, Soul Touch is the right game to buy.
💸 Worth every cent. Highly recommended!

Mandate Of Heaven — the FMV that crowns this golden year of FMV games

I had pretty much closed out 2025 for FMV games already, but a huge surprise landed in November: Mandate Of Heaven is the best Chinese historical drama FMV I’ve ever played.

You play as the king’s second son, locked in a struggle for the throne, and you follow his whole life through wars, battles, and political intrigue as he fights to shape his own fate.

It’s a fantastic concept for an FMV, and it’s executed extremely well.

Special mention to the sheer number of hours of content and the game’s cinematography, which manages to blend third-person and first-person shots in a really satisfying way.

⏱️ Playtime
First playthrough: ~9 hours

🎧 Technical Highlights

🎵 Soundtrack – Excellent and fits every scene. The menu theme and the tracks used throughout the game are really catchy.

🎬 Cinematography – Stunning. Every scene was shot in real, beautiful locations. Direction, shot composition, and costumes are top-notch. Nothing feels out of place. The region where it was filmed is gorgeous.

👥 Characters – Fantastic. The performances are great, and there’s a large cast of characters in the game; it works perfectly.

🌍 Localization – Very good and easy to understand, but there is one issue: the time-jump/title cards are not translated, so you still don’t know what’s being written there, and also when a new character is introduced on screen.

If you’re on a tight budget and love FMV games and historical stories, Mandate Of Heaven is the one to buy.
💸 Worth every penny. Highly recommended!

Such a Guy — the FMV I’d been waiting for that truly shows the genre’s full potential.

A big thank-you to the writer and the entire dev team. I could feel your hearts in this game.

2025 has been a magical year for FMVs, with lots of great, varied releases. Such a Guy slipped in near the end of 2025 and completely won me over.

If someone asked “what’s an FMV?” in 2025, I’d point them to this game.

⏱️ Playtime
First playthrough: ~8 hours

🎧 Technical Highlights

🎵 Soundtrack – Very good and fits the scenes. There’s a touch of AI here and there, but nothing that breaks the mood. Could improve further, but it’s already strong.

🎬 Cinematography – Stunning. Every scene was shot in real, beautiful locations. Direction, shot composition, and costumes are top-notch. Nothing feels out of place. The region filmed is gorgeous—it even made me want to visit.

👥 Characters – Fantastic. The female leads are each strong in their own way. Supporting characters are fun and well-acted. I especially liked the protagonist’s two friends, and the girls’ routes were all appealing—there wasn’t a single one I didn’t want to pursue.

🌍 Localization – Very good. Easy to understand; you can play 99% with no issues. The only thing I’d ask for is subtitles for the occasional on-screen Chinese text in videos, but that’s rare.

If you’re on a tight budget and love FMV games, Such a Guy is the one to buy.

🎥 Love Is All Around 2 – A must-play if you’re into FMV, and a serious GOTY 2025 contender, every day that passes, I keep thinking: this game is going to be the next FMV GOTY.

I thought 2025 had already peaked — and then Intiny drops the sequel to the best FMV ever made:
Love Is All Around

You don’t need to play the first one to enjoy this, but it’s worth it for the easter eggs — and honestly, the first game is still my all-time favorite FMV.

💬 Biggest issue right away: no official English subtitles at launch 😕
Huge thanks to Nutcrackr for saving the day — you can download and play the game with English subs here:👉 Click here!!!

⏱️ Playtime:

First playthrough: 4 hours
100% completion: 8–10 hours, depending on your pace

🐉 Story
Set in a charming Chinese wuxia world, you play as a protagonist seeking answers after losing his family in a mysterious incident. Along the way, you’ll experience danger, joy, sorrow — and possibly love with five unique and memorable female characters. Your choices shape the outcome.

🎧 Technical Highlights

🎵 Soundtrack – Absolutely incredible. I have zero complaints. The main theme and all the tracks are great, and there’s an awesome bonus: each heroine has a music video that reflects her personality and story arc.

🎙️ Voice acting – High-quality studio recordings. A few lines dip in quality, but honestly, you probably won’t even notice.

🖥️ Interface – Super smooth and functional. If you’re using English subtitles, there’s a minor visual bug with the in-game cards — Chinese characters fit perfectly, while English text sometimes overlaps. Still, it doesn’t ruin the experience, and the UI is great for replaying and unlocking all content efficiently.

🎬 Cinematography – Stunning. No green screens — all scenes were shot on real, beautiful locations. Direction, shot composition, and costumes are all top-notch. Nothing ever feels out of place.

👥 Characters – Amazing. The female leads are all strong in their own way. Supporting characters are fun and well-acted. The protagonist’s best friend (who appears in all of Intiny’s games) has become the studio’s unofficial mascot. Shoutout to Su Qing’er’s father and the father of the Xie sisters — their scenes were very well done.

🌍 Localization – My biggest complaint. Intiny needs to start launching their games with official English subtitles. It really hurts international word-of-mouth, especially for a game this good.

💖 Affinity Ranking (my personal opinion)
Aning – The best. I connected with her the most. An emotional rollercoaster.

Xie Ke – The older sister. Super cool, with some breathtaking scenes.

Su Qing’er – The writer. I really liked how her route played out.

Xie Xiaoxiao – The younger sister. A lot of fun and another emotional rollercoaster.

Lu Mingyue – The princess fighting for her people. Great character.

Liu Shishi – The Queen of Flowers uncovering secrets from her past. Loved her route too.

If you’re on a tight budget and love FMV games, Love Is All Around 2 is the game to buy.
💸 It’s worth every cent. Highly recommended!

Breaker of Fatalism – The FMV GOTY of 2025? A modern fantasy I couldn’t put down until the end.

The second half of 2025 is off to a blazing start, and Breaker of Fatalism is an excellent surprise.

I mentioned in another review: “I really hope FMV games keep evolving, bringing us more stories and refining the genre until it can truly compete with other forms of media.”

That’s exactly what I felt with Breaker of Fatalism. It plays like a good-quality TV miniseries—but it’s an FMV, and one I would absolutely binge on "Steamflix."

Technical Aspects:

🎵 Soundtrack – Absolutely solid. There are multiple background tracks and even songs sing, and none of it feels AI-generated or cheap. Real music, real atmosphere.

🎙️ Voice audio – Very good. It’s not perfect, but clearly studio-recorded and well-mixed with ambient scene sounds. The blend between studio clarity and in-scene realism worked well for immersion.

🖥️ Interface – Clean, beautiful, no bugs at all in my playthrough. It also includes a lot of useful information to help you get into the story.

🎬 Cinematography – Excellent. The game takes you through many beautiful and varied locations. The use of supporting characters works well, and the visual effects—especially during power usage scenes—are the best I’ve seen in any FMV. First-person shots mixed with third-person acting were a smart choice and very effective.

🌲 Bonus points – There's a forest scene with an invisible enemy, and another one where you rely only on sound. Genius design choices that gave me chills.

The story is a modern fantasy where you uncover personal secrets and decide the fate of the world. Without spoiling anything—it's not a flawless plot, but it’s solid and convincing. It kept me hooked. If anything, story is where they can go even further in the next game.

Characters – The main character has a soul! He’s not an emotionless player insert. You’ll probably like all the main cast: your friend, your uncle, and especially the leading women. None of them felt weak or unnecessary.

Localization – I had no major issues understanding the story. There was a single scene where subtitles didn’t show up, but nothing game-breaking. This could improve with more language options—even DeepSeek-level AI subs would help, especially if they’re based on an already solid translation.

⏱️ My first playthrough lasted about 4 hours, which is great—it’s not one of those super short FMVs. Now I’m going for the 100%.

This is Breaker of Fatalism — easily in my Top 3 FMVs of the year, and maybe even the best one yet. Highly recommended. What a year for FMV fans!

Don’t FOOL ME, Beauties! – The FMV That Closed the First Half of 2025 with a Bang!
From the same studio behind Five Hearts Under One Roof, Storytaco proves once again why it’s becoming one of the top FMV studios — and the undisputed leader in Korea.

If you enjoy a heartfelt and engaging story, this game is for you. It keeps you hooked the whole way through, and you won’t even notice time passing.

Highlights:
Interface: Clean, beautiful, responsive, and bug-free.

Soundtrack: Excellent! It feels handcrafted and well-matched to the scenes. The music doesn’t sound AI-generated and is used at the right moments to enhance the mood.

Voice Acting: Often a weak point in FMVs, but handled well here. The lines are recorded in a studio, so the audio is clear and consistent. Sure, you can tell it’s studio-recorded in a few spots, but I prefer that over poor-quality on-set audio. It’s not a perfect 10, but it’s definitely above average.

Story: A clear improvement over the previous title. I finished the game in nearly 4 hours (compared to about 2.5 in the last one), and it never got boring. The main character’s development felt meaningful and satisfying.

The Heroines: There are four love interests, and honestly, I wanted to pursue all of them. On my first playthrough, I chose Ji-woo, who I felt the strongest connection with.

Languages: I was impressed by how many languages are available at launch — and the quality is great. I could easily follow the story the whole time, aside from one small subtitle bug near the end.

Don’t FOOL ME, Beauties! is a strong step forward for the FMV genre. Storytaco is clearly evolving, delivering smoother, longer, and more emotionally engaging experiences. If you enjoy interactive romance stories, don’t miss this one!

A must-play for FMV and Wuxia/Xianxia fans!

"Beauty, Please Don't Distract Me From Becoming Immortal" is the best FMV I've played in 2025.

From the creators of Knowledge, or Know Lady, this game brings a fresh Xianxia theme while keeping the emotional depth and charm of their previous work. It’s rare to find a Xianxia FMV, and this one absolutely nails it.

✅ Stunning interface – fast, modern, and beautiful.
✅ Fantastic soundtrack – immersive and fitting for every scene.
✅ Well-written story – every heroine has a satisfying route, no weak endings.
✅ Solid visual effects – despite the heavy use of chroma key, it fits the mystical world of cultivation.
✅ Good audio – better than most FMVs, with only minor quality issues.

The only real downside is the translation. Some lines and side quests lack subtitles, which is a shame—but it doesn't ruin the experience.

If you enjoy interactive stories, beautiful characters, and a touch of martial fantasy, this is a gem worth playing. I’m really excited to see what this studio does next!

Extra: I'm happy to see actresses from the first game, even one I didn't think would appear, but she shows up in the middle of the game.

Cellveillance – The most mature and impressive narrative from 2025 so far

I finished the game this past weekend and I definitely recommend it. It's amazing to see how much EpicDream has evolved in their games.

Unlike a typical FMV, I wouldn't suggest this to someone looking for a 100% lighthearted or "sweet" story. But if you're into a deep, mysterious, and suspenseful narrative that doesn’t shy away from darker or more serious themes, this is for you.

This is a suspense story with touches of romance and fantasy. You play as the building manager, trying to make some money to help your mother. But things quickly get complicated, and you’ll face tough choices—some good, some not so good.

The idea behind the story works really well for an FMV. The use of surveillance cameras combined with mystery is a great match. There were only two scene transitions that felt a bit off—like "how did we get here?" moments—but aside from that, the story about cults, death, good and evil was well-executed.

As for the audio, it was decent. A few scenes had lower sound quality, but overall it’s above average compared to other FMVs. Audio is one of the hardest parts to get right in this genre, especially on a budget, so I can overlook it until better low-cost solutions become available.

Romance-wise, none of the routes were bad. Some tackled mature themes in a thoughtful way, and I appreciated that as a viewer. My favorite routes were with Lin Tong and Xu Huiyun.

The interface was smooth and bug-free. The game ran well, didn’t feel heavy, and the design was well-thought-out. I also liked the use of AI—it felt well integrated without being awkward.

In the end, this is a solid FMV game that’s worth playing. I recommend it.

My Journey – The Most Balanced Period FMV Yet, and a Step Forward for the Genre

This game is well-produced. One common issue with FMV games is the lack of background actors, but My Journey doesn’t have that problem. There’s a good number of extras and supporting characters, which helps tell the story without placing all the weight on the main characters. (Also, Aunt Lan was hilarious!)

The cinematography is well done. Scenes like the daughter visiting her father in prison and the beautifully shot pavilion stand out as visual highlights.

Regarding the main characters, starting with our protagonist—he's decent, nothing extraordinary, but it's nice that we have a fan in several scenes, which he occasionally uses while speaking, adding more life to the character.

The female leads were handled well. Each of them has their own side quest, and by the end, they contribute to the main story. The game gives them enough screen time to showcase their personalities, which makes their involvement feel meaningful.

The sound design was also good—no scenes had bad audio or that artificial "AI-processed" feel.

The interface was okay, too. I didn’t experience any delays or freezing when selecting dialogue options or switching chapters.

Now, for the story—I felt the beginning was too rushed. It could have been smoother in establishing our role as the prince. The middle section is where the game truly shines, as we dive into the mission. However, the ending was weak. A more refined conclusion—one that gives players a proper farewell to the characters they’ve followed throughout the journey—would have made a big difference.

That said, My Journey follows the path I love: a drama with romance, set in historical China. I really hope FMV games keep evolving, bringing us more stories and refining the genre until it can truly compete with other forms of media.

Wishful Journey: Love Across Time - A hidden gem

I came across Wishful Journey: Love Across Time on Steam, and I have to say it was a pleasant surprise. Each character has a distinct personality, which makes the interactions engaging and immersive. Although the story has a bit of a rough start, the further you go, the better it gets. The pace improves and, in the final stages, the experience becomes really enjoyable.

That said, I wish the game supported more languages. This would help attract a wider audience and, in turn, support the developers financially. With more resources, they could refine the narrative and create a sequel or another even better game

If you like narrative-based experiences with unique characters, it's worth a try! We hope the developers continue to grow and bring us even better stories in the future.
