The word 'diabetes' originates from ancient Greece, meaning 'to pass through'; describing the excessive urination that is typical of diabetics. The word 'mellitus' is latin for sweet, which references the high glucose content of said urine and the ancient diagnostic practice of tasting urine. A lesser known diabetic condition 'diabetes insipidus' uses the latin word for tasteless - which makes use of the negative prefix 'in' and the word 'sapidus' which means tasty. This condition, as you can imagine, was also diagnosed through urine tasting.
