The word 'mellitus' is latin for sweet, which references the high glucose content of said urine and the ancient diagnostic practice of tasting urine. A lesser known diabetic condition 'diabetes insipidus' uses the latin word for tasteless - which makes use of the negative prefix 'in' and the word 'sapidus' which means tasty. This condition, as you can imagine, was also diagnosed through urine tasting.
