Tense gameplay, beautiful visuals, great writing, interesting plot.
It uses much of the same mechanics as Dishonored, so enemies sometimes act a bit odd, but it adds to the combat and humor, if anything. The game isn't serious, and all the enemies are presumed to be either hungover or sky-high so it honestly fits. There's no morality system, so you can gun down Eternalists to your hearts content. There isn't even an option for nonlethal takedowns! What's more is enemies lose you fast and not everyone on the map is alerted at once, so you can easily stealth one room while causing chaos in the next. You can only have 3 weapons and 2 abilities equipped at a time, which sometimes feels limiting, but given the emphasis on more fast-paced gameplay it's a necessary bit of streamlining, and requires you to really think about your build.
The main enemies, the Visionaries, seem to be really well-written and interesting, but it doesn't really come through in gameplay (or maybe I wasn't paying attention to the expository dialogue you sometimes get) since they mostly just act like regular enemies with special abilities and a bit more health. I haven't perfected my run yet, so I haven't found all the ways you're "supposed" to kill them, but you can get really creative in the ways you deal with them.
Though I can't say I haven't gotten frustrated when being invaded by Juliana (other players) since it always happens just at the start of the mission when there are tons of other enemies around and it really doesn't seem fair a lot of the time. Juliana gets all the same movement and takedown mechanics as Colt, so it's a bit easy to get cheesed and instakilled with the machete takedown. That's not saying I've never killed an invader (I'm not that bad of a gamer) and when you DO win it's really an incredible feeling (plus your lives get refreshed so it doesn't bog down the rest of the mission). So, maybe it balances out. You can, also, turn off invasions, which it seems like many people have done given reports of looong matchmaking when playing as Juliana.
Lots of people have been complaining about performance, and I have noticed some issues but not nearly as dramatic as others claim, and I've only got a mid-range AMD GPU.* I'm inclined to believe the problems are caused by Arkane's Void Engine, which has been poorly optimized since it launched with Dishonored 2. That said, it produces some of the most beautiful graphics I've ever seen in games, so, again, maybe it just has its pros and cons. Also, Denuvo, the much-maligned DRM software the game uses, probably isn't doing any favors lol. If you have a decent PC you -probably- won't find too many issues, fingers crossed.
I think that most of the negative reviews are coming from a loud minority of players who are getting really poor performance and want to voice their frustration with Denuvo, which is valid, though, again, I think it's the engine in this case. If you have a decent PC, don't let the DRM boogeyman keep you from Deathloop, which is an excellent game.

*If I encounter anything that ruins the experience I'll update this review. I wanted to get this positive one out to counteract this initial unfair flood of review-bombing.

Combat is blazingly fast and the tech is supremely satisfying. Just when you feel as though you've mastered it, you discover a new mechanic that further elevates the skill ceiling. And as if it needed more, it gets plus a letter grade from me for being full of cool robots.

Not nearly as bad as it was made out to be. I got it for only 2 bucks on sale and it was definitely worth it. It's quite janky at times, but it has some interesting mechanics, and a somewhat compelling plot, even if the writing might leave something to be desired. I would even say that it holds up graphically, though it's got a really gray aesthetic. It also has some decent variety in its gameplay and level design. Definitely worth picking up when on sale.

Hey this is pretty neat-o. A lot like Lego or Minecraft, but the wheels are real wheels, and you don't have to worry about a driver's seat. There are also planes. You can make a stealth bomber if you want to be "that guy." Don't be "that guy."
pls

It has a good story, it is well-designed, it's challenging and it's fun.
