Overall, it’s a fun game, but it's an experience that makes me wish I could leave a recommendation somewhere in between. It falls off very hard in both gameplay and quality after you clear the first half of the game.

The first area of the game is incredible. Every zombie is uniquely designed and has unique behaviors. The clinic is tense and keeps you on edge. INCREDIBLE atmosphere. The sound design is unreal, you can hear zombies screaming and thrashing ♥♥♥♥ around in other rooms. You can even hear their footsteps on floors above you. It’s the survival horror experience you are looking for. Going in and cleaning up as Leon was very satisfying after being terrorized by seemingly formidable opponents from Grace's perspective. If the entire game played like the first half, I would argue it's one of the best Resident Evil titles ever released.

However, the second half is wildly different. The environment becomes dull and full of reused assets. The Racoon City segment has two different models of zombies that you will kill over and over. The lab has zombies and lickers. No more unique behavior from enemies, they are predictable and no longer scary. Very little thought was put into the gameplay at this point. One could argue that it's because the game now prioritizes and emphasizes combat more, but you will realize just how lackluster the combat is once it becomes the focus. RE9s combat is a simplified version of RE4 remakes with the addition of the counter mechanic. Shooting limbs no longer gives you unique melee attacks. Only headshots stagger and enable a kick that will knock the enemy down. The counter mechanic rewards the player by punishing the enemy after a well-timed input, or that’s how it should work anyway. You can spam space bar and the counter will go off anyways most of the time. It feels a bit half assed to put it bluntly. Theres a motorcycle action segment that’s cool cinematically but is otherwise lame because it feels impossible to lose. These are just some examples of why I feel the way I do.

For these reasons, about half the game is incredibly mid unfortunately. I appreciate the effort to make both the action and survival horror fans of the series happy but it falls short of a great game because of it. I give it a 6/10 just because of how incredible the first half is. WHY didn’t they just repeat what they did right for the second half. Disappointing.

Early Access Review
Competent mythic + simulator. If you ever wanted to run dungeons in wow without actually playing wow, this is the game for you. Decent variety of classes/dungeons, even in early access. I assume there will be a lot more content than their currently is eventually, but the average player player will find that there is already enough there to justify its 25 dollar price tag.

The games biggest flaw(s) lie in its servers. The hub is buggy/laggy if there is more than 5 people hanging around in it. Luckily lag has not been an issue at all in the dungeons, but there has been times the game has crashed and not let me back in in to finish the dungeon under the time limit. It has only happened once or twice at my current hours of play time, but I hope the servers will improve in quality when/if the game picks up in popularity. I have also observed some balancing issues (rogue class appears to be very underpowered, archer does loads of damage with little effort), but I do not think I have the expertise to be confident in that obvservation at this point in time.

Regarding the community, I have not had the same experiences others seem to be having. Everyone has been really nice and patient. Only in the most extreme circumstances have I seen someone rage quit a dungeon, and it has not happened often. The community seems to be generally open to helping people and explaining mechanics. I should note that I have 20 years of mmo experience, so I can not speak on behalf of someone new to this specific style of gameplay.

Update: ok yeah the servers are god awful

Not going to add to the plethora of people talking about the performance issues. Yes the game runs like ass.

The actual game itself is incredibly boring. You traverse the map fighting the same enemies over and over again EVERY 30 seconds, and the combat itself is very easy and unsatisfying. Every class has a large variety of skills and abilities, but it doesn't matter which one you choose to spam because it will always result in victory. The only exception to this is occasionally having to climb a monster and aim for a weak point, but that gets old after the first 10 times you do it.

This game is labeled as an "rpg", which confuses me because there is little to no role-playing qualities in this title. Your companions are soulless drones that do your bidding, and there are no lore explanations for this. The game literally just tells you no one knows why. There is little to no world building. The world feels uninspired and lame. Your character is defined by nothing, not even by class because you can swap classes at will and if you play enough Im sure you can max them all out anyways. There are no decisions that matter to make.

If anything the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about performance HELPED reviews, because the attention was placed elsewhere. This game is VERY mid. If you have played the first game, its the EXACT same game just with poorer performance and you run into the same 5 enemies more frequently.

Just like any other card game you can find online (hearthstone, magic) they always end up suffering from the same issue:
Deck building devolves into the same 5 "meta" decks if you want to climb. There isn't any combos or play styles for you to discover. The developer knows this and you are forced to grind for gems or spend money to get the best cards so you can achieve a certain rank. Like I said, every card game online is guilty of this, and there really is no way around it because the actualy physical card games were the same ♥♥♥♥.
Its a money/time sink and and the only thing that makes you a better player is luck and how much money you sank into it.
I won't reccomend this or any other card game until someone finds a way to develop a game like this without this problem.

For players who played the first game:
It is basically the same game with every feature slightly improved. If you want more of what you played in the first game, this game is for you. This game offers exactly that. If you did not like the first game, do not play this game.
New players:
This is a game that is heavily reliant on RNG and guessing. Just like any dice or card game. The outcome of things in this game are not always entirely in your control. Sometimes its just making the best out of a bad situation. That being said some people will not like this game and that is okay. Start with the first game. Do you like it? Yes? Play this game. No? Do not play it. Its that simple.

Didn't think they'd recover from 6.
I'm glad I was wrong.

What the hell do we even call this genre? Theres no gameplay so is it really even a game? "Walking simulator with the occasional jump scare 2016!!!!!!!". You can get the same experience watching someone play this as you would playing this yourself. This game sucks and you suck.

Every Paradox game seems to have the same issue. Sometimes theres not enough to do and youre bored out of your mind fastforwarding through the years, other times theres so much going on that youre about to have an anxiety attack. Its a really bad combination of too much going on and not enough going on, but hey, maybe you like that kind of thing.
Good for you for liking thing.

Its not even half a game. This should be free until they release the full version. Don't fall for this, I got my refund today and its a very satisfying feeling. Developers on steam will now have a harder time ripping people off.
