The good: Feet first into hell, gentleman.

The bad: Server and matchmaking are relatively broken for a game that sold over a million copies. Balancing is busted for certain enemies (charger). The paid battlepass does add some pay to win elements.

It's fun. Replay value comes from multiplayer so you better have some friends.

This game feels more like a love letter to the arcade flight sim genre than it does a rip-off of any existing titles (looking at these reviews against Ace Combat). If you enjoy the arcade sim genre, this game is a must have addition to your collection. Played on console for a while, so excuse my limited PC hours.

Pros:
- Satisfying combat at higher difficulty levels.
- Satisfying mission lengths and enemy counts/variety.
- Aircraft detail and selection.
- Graphics are really nice, particularly the lighting, but not spectacular for the skybox/clouds/trees (oh god the trees are terrible).
- VR is very satisfying. Each plane has a unique cockpit (including functional radar and mirrors), and some are definitely more appealing than others.
- One death restart and no checkpoints for that extra spicy combat.

Cons:
- Enemy AI can be a bit...confused at times.
- Occasionally annoying in-mission dialogue length.
- Weapon selection system can be a bit broken at times.
- The game isn't 100% optimized, so expect occasional performance dips. Especially in VR.
- No cinematic cut-scenes (completely personal con, doesn't take away from the game at all).
- THE TREES. They look awful and have no collision.

Rust is a survival game like all the others, still "in development", and has pretty standard game mechanics that you usually encounter with these kinds of games. Rust's independence comes from the underlying inevitability that all of your progress will be wiped clean (on average bi-weekly). This means that players will have to restart every time the server does (well, every time it wipes that is). This frequently allows Rust to give players a new experience, and to help balance the field of play.
