Even though Tyrell is a slave-owner and essentially a creator of a corrupt system, Batty’s method of killing him is framed as monstrous and atavistic. This choice aligns with the societal narrative because it frames the slave’s rebellion not as a struggle for rights, but as a beastly outburst of uncontrollable rage.
pointemorte. 11 Apr @ 5:18am
If Batty had let Deckard drop off the roof, the audience would likely view him as a cold, irredeemable villain. He is forced to perform an act of supreme, almost superhuman forgiveness to earn the audience's empathy. This is the ultimate proof of his othering: Deckard is allowed to be a flawed, brutal, morally compromised human, but Batty must become a transcendent, mythical martyr just to be deemed worthy of grief.
pointemorte. 11 Apr @ 5:16am
Furthermore, his speech does not describe the brutal, mechanistic reality of being a slave-soldier. Instead, he speaks of "attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion" and "C-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate." This language is mythopoetic. It transforms his trauma into an exotic, mystical incantation. Much like the stereotypical depiction of a native chieftain recounting his tribe's lore to a white colonizer, Batty’s experiences are presented as beautiful but ultimately incomprehensible to the "civilized" protagonist. He is performing the role of the mystical Other, turning his mechanized enslavement into an exotic fairy tale that the audience is primed to consume as poetry.
pointemorte. 11 Apr @ 5:16am
In the climax, Batty strips down to minimal clothing, howls like a wolf, hunts his prey through a ruined landscape, and pushes a nail through his own hand. While traditionally read as Christological imagery, it also mirrors the tropes of shamanic endurance rituals—bodily mortification used to achieve a higher spiritual state. He ceases to be a futuristic combat soldier and regresses into an atavistic, tribal figure.

The poet stepped over to a window overlooking the square. He sat on the windowsill. He gazed out the window for a long time. People were walking across the square. In twenty minutes an entire eternity passed. Finally, in the distance, a soft approaching rumble was heard. The tsar’s automobile slowed and stopped at the entrance.

Having arrived from his private apartment on Vasilyevsky Island, the small squealing little freak on short crooked legs, waddling like a duck, Uritsky ran into the entrance of the palace. It is said that Uritsky liked to boast about the number of death sentences he signed. How many was he supposed to sign today? But the young man in the leather jacket stood up. And at the moment when the chief of the extraordinary commission was scuttling on his short little legs toward the elevator, from six paces a shot rang out at Uritsky. Leonid Kannegiser killed Uritsky on the spot.
pointemorte. 10 Apr @ 12:48pm
At the beginning of the eleventh hour of the morning on August 30, a handsome twenty-year-old young man “of bourgeois origin,” a Jew by nationality, left an apartment on Saperny Lane in Petersburg, dressed in a leather jacket. The young poet Leonid Kannegiser got on his bicycle and rode toward the square of the Winter Palace. In front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Uritsky usually arrived, Kannegiser stopped, got off his bicycle, and entered that entrance of the semicircular palace to which Uritsky always drove up.

— Is Comrade Uritsky receiving? — the young man asked the old doorman from tsarist times.

— Has not arrived yet, sir, — the doorman replied.

War became increasingly abstract with the development of long-range weapons such as artillery and later military aircraft. Artillery operators do not directly experience the damage caused by exploding shells, and bomber crews cannot directly witness the destruction caused by weapons such as the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The notion that unmanned aerial vehicles introduced this abstraction is inaccurate. In contemporary conflicts, Ukrainians sometimes label Russian artillery operators as war criminals, but such accusations overlook the distinction between the remote operation of destructive weapons and the direct, personal execution of civilians, as occurred in Bucha.

A whole lot of NOTHING will happen tonight, never to happen again. I don’t want ANYTHING to happen, and it probably WON'T. However, now that we have Complete and Total NOTHING, where THE SAME AS ALWAYS minds prevail, maybe NOTHING can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most NOTHING BURGER moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally REMAIN IN PLACE. It was pure fluke that 8 Mile was my first cinema experience. It was the big film at the time. If it had been Legally Blonde, I’d have enjoyed it but the impact wouldn’t have been the same. I wouldn’t have ended up a pink-clad, blond lawyer. Instead, discovering Eminem was the right thing for me at just the right time. To this day, when I’m cleaning my house, I still rap his music inside my head, sometimes in Yiddish.

In his time essentially everyone despised homosexuals. Pretty much everyone. Even in the 1980's in my hometown that would have been a dangerous thing to be.

If you are going to hate people who were anti-gay in the 1980's or earlier in history you better pack a lunch. That was everyone; communists, Republicans, Democrats, men, women, dogs, cats... Schools, the Government, the military, your best friends Mom, psychiatrists, all news media...

You must be very young to not know that. Or you are an old fool who thinks you can re-write history.

The course of human history is currently being shaped by little more than the death spiral between an essentially sociopathic liberalism, dedicated to no principle other than meritocracy - and so looking just as threadbare and nasty as that principle itself - and the politics of rage and grievance being sold to meritocracy's losers by right-wing political entrepreneurs. The latter exploiting both the market-forged shallowness of the current era and the toxic and malevolent force of patriotic identity - something whose defining purpose has always been to produce a class of cannon fodder, willing to sacrifice their lives one way or another... in a trench, in a mine or factory... in service of institutions invented to serve and empower their 'betters'.

That giant leap for mankind didn't really prove to be that giant - great for the aerospace industry in Southern California perhaps (how much is this jaunt costing the U.S. taxpayer?) Interestingly, when Armstrong and co did their lunar thing, the USA was deeply mired in Vietnam and now, here we are over half a century later about to get bogged down in yet another forever war. Strikes me as a colossal waste of time, expertise and aluminum. When I want a trip to the moon, I'll just watch Wallace and Gromit

Keeping protoplasmic meatbags alive in a vacuum shot through with violent, ineluctable radiation against which there's never really enough shielding, zero-or-near-g the while hollowing out the animal's bones and doing what's now known to be all manner of irreversible physiological damage, is a insupportable waste, proximately, of the increasingly scarce resources available for extraterrestrial research and, more broadly, of the substance of an Earth awash in a score of different flavors of chaos. Grow up.

Utter nonsense. When you set foot on the surface of a lifeless orb, that foot of yours is removed by, what, 4 cm of insulation, and by the technosociopolitical force of however many millions of £€¥$ the insulation cost, from both the body on which you stand and the planet that sent you there. To do a job a robot could do -- and I hear there's this great new thing called "artificial intelligence" that supposedly works a treat for this sort of exploratory/experimental stuff, especially when attached to semiautonomous mechanisms -- in a place where only a robot can or ever will survive in any meaningful sense of the word.

The officers activated their light and sound signals, giving the tractor driver a clear signal to stop. However, he continued driving across the field and did not intend to stop. At one point, one of the officers got out of the police car and ran into the field to stop the driver. When the 47 year old man saw the officer signaling him with his hand to stop, he accelerated and tried to run him over. The officer jumped aside. He then jumped into the vehicle from the rear of the tractor and, after restraining the driver, stopped the vehicle. The man did not give up and struck the officer in the head and tried to break free. The officers subdued and detained him. Already during the detention, they could smell alcohol on him. A sobriety test showed that he had nearly 3 per mille of alcohol in his system. Additionally, it turned out that he did not have a driving license, and the agricultural tractor he was driving did not have valid technical inspection certification.

On Friday (27 March) at around 5:40 p.m., the duty officer of the police unit in Łosice received information about a man driving an agricultural tractor without having the required authorization. Police officers immediately intervened and, while on their way to the scene, on a public road in one of the villages in the Olszanka municipality, they noticed an Ursus tractor whose driver, upon seeing the police car, left the road and drove onto nearby fields.
