Early Access Review
Still in its Early Access, Space Haven has a going for it, but also a lot going against it.

I enjoy games like Prison Architect, and Space Haven certainly gives that feel - but in SPACE! There's a bit of a learning curve to keep the ship and crew functioning. At times, it feels impossible to keep all of the tasks up and running. Even more so, finding parts to continue your jumps through space become troublesome the longer you play. I've lost many a-game from running out of fuel. At the moment, the easiest way to progress through the game is just through trading - which I feel is a nice aspect to the game - but shouldn't BE the whole game.

Every ship I encounter, I'm trading for fuel because my food growth is fine - it's that commodity of progression I need. While yes, I can MAKE fuel, there's too few resources to find that. So I focus trade. Salvage and trade. That's the game.

But it's also fun! Exploring derelict ships has a moody, dark atmosphere. Picking up journal logs adds to the story and the "world" as a whole. As I progress, I find tougher aliens, sometimes tougher allies, and. . . that's is.

For me, at the moment, there's no real "need" to progress aside from picking up logs. I still have a long ways to go to "finish the story" - but after hours and hours of playing - I don't really remember what it is.

Being too busy trying to figure out what keeps my crew alive has become all-encompassing. Trying to salvage, store, and monitor inventory is growing troublesome as my cargo doesn't allow for easy management. Fighting is interesting, but needs a lot of polish. Exploring new systems sometimes comes with game-crippling results making you more frustrated than excited.

I do recommend this game because there's a lot of potential that I'm seeing here. The music, mood, and gameplay is fun and engaging. But it's also Early Access, so gameplay can be very frustrating until some of the UI and bugs get a good look at.

I'm very excited to see how this game will develop. Like one Chancellor Palpatine once said: "We will watch your career with great interest."
