very cool game, like if FTL was a programming game. i get fatal crashes on linux which needs to be fixed but aside from that i'd def take a chance on this despite it being new and obscure

very mid, cannot recommend this compared to the plethora of roguelite autobattler options with more depth

The pseudo-multiplayer mode (think backpack battles) is really fun and I'd argue it should be the core game mode

It's arguably too RNG and is short a few mechanics that would elevate it to greatness but still worth it rn

Ville has insinuated that people will dislike this game because they want Cruelty Squad 2 instead of what this is supposed to be- something more complex and hardcore. Something unafraid to explore new ideas.

Ironically I think this game is flawed for the opposite reason. In practice, the core loop is very similar to Cruelty Squad but with fewer decisions to make and less mechanical depth

One big problem is there's simply not much content. Even if the "coming soon" parts were finished now it would still be far more barebones and less interactive than cruelty squad

Levels are small and barren, most characters have no dialogue and there are too few chances for humor and atmosphere to shine through

There are remarkably few opportunities for the mech vs mech combat like you'd expect. and even then, enemy mech AI is barely beyond that of a turret

RPG features like dialogue, reputation systems, deeper character stats are marketed but have almost no significance in gameplay. It feels like Ville had bigger ambitions when prototyping these systems but at some point lost interest in using them to make a unique, fully realized game

Had cruelty squad not made millions, I'd have assumed this was released unfinished due to financial necessity. But like Mojang with 0x10c and Introversion with Subversion, I think he wanted to follow up an indie success with something more systemically complex and interesting to him but got burnt out trying to tie these systems into a coherent, *fun* game.

This genuinely could be a flawed masterpiece with more work, more devs, and more time "finding the fun". But he seems fed up with it and I assume this will merely leave EA with a few more quests and environments

I think both this and cruelty squad are genuine works of art and I spent $40 to support Ville and be his paypig.

But for that price there are many equally creative indie games you can buy which have far more effort and intentionality behind them. Just like cruelty squad did
