As my first exposure to the universe of half life, I couldn't be more appreciative of this recreation. It is beautifully made. The best of both modern and classic PC era graphics rolled into one. Color, lighting, and textures were masterfully selected and implemented, giving the game a truly unique look. The universe is rich with history though none of it is explained directly. The world's narrative had to be pieced together through exploration, which is ironically, refreshing.

Gameplay is engaging in both the navigational and combat aspects. Moving around the world, exploring different paths, and solving platforming puzzles have never been so sorely missed. Every object in the world feels purposefully placed. Could do with more interactions with movable items, but whenever such a gameplay device is used, it adds a great deal of fun an depth to the game.

Despite not having played the original, I am still quite familiar with the sounds of the original game due to half life memes (which I now appreciate even more) being so prolific. So, I can tell that the creators of this remake put a lot of care into making sure that the sound was true to the original, while being clearer, punchier, and grander, which all tied well with the fresher, more colorful look of this remake.

Shooting was a blast. The sounds of the guns helped with making the gunplay enjoyable. Enemies were varied enough in terms of design and behaviour. Many of them moved around a lot which made hitting them and taking them out with precision all that more satisfying. Except maybe the bullsquids which didn't really move around that much - but it had its own reasons for being rewarding to take down. The evolution of the environment as the levels progressed, coupled with the addition of new movement mechanics, kept upping the ante of the gunplay and exploration. Almost as if there were 2 games in 1 - pre and post Xen.

To summarize simply, thank you to the creators of this wonderful rendition of half-life 1. It has made me a fan of its quirky and mysterious universe and reminded me of a time when valve had fun making games and writing stories.
