warning: the first part is my new review. the part after that is what I wrote initially

so the day after I posted this originally negative review, daniel mullins came out on twitter with kaycee's mod, an endless version of the first cabin game. this is pretty much what i wanted and more. thank you based daniel mullins.

(original review)
first overall review, then for each 'part'. both have mild spoilers but nothing specific

if you're seeing this, you've probably seen a few other negative (and even positive) reviews pointing out that only the first part of the game is what this steam page promises, with the weird shadow guy playing cards with you while you're trying to figure out what's going on.
that's really all there is to it. first part is great. gets worse over time. after the cabin, the game just starts going all over the place. it has arg parts that you'll have to look up to understand what's going on which I also didn't like. not only that, but the arg stuff was not particularly interesting or even innovative, even when it comes to args (which are rarely interesting or innovative in the first place.) if this game is still so well-reviewed, i have to imagine that most people enjoy or don't mind that, but that's why i'm making a steam review instead of whining about it in every discord server i can find.
I've played 12.2 hours of this game, and around 3 of those were in the cabin. the remaining 9 hours took away from the enjoyment of the first part enough for this review to be negative. I would buy this game again at full price for 12 hours of the cabin part.

the cabin game is largely the same as a demo you might've seen a few years ago called 'sacrifices must be made'. I haven't played the demo currently on steam, but I imagine it's a little different since the reason the demo had that name was not present in the full game (it was not just that you sacrifice stuff, I promise.) it very much is a card game but is good at what it does. if you don't like card games, it won't win you over or anything. the stuff surrounding the card game and how it affects the game really is the best part, like when you first get defeated or use the pincers. it also has some cool surprise moments. otherwise, it is pretty much what the steam screenshots show you.

then there's another game where you get to play the first game but also different card games at the same time. that one is probably my favourite mechanically, and probably the only part worth replaying, but everything apart from the game itself is kinda average.

then, believe it or not, there's another game in which you go back to a mix of the first and second games, with more twists on the mechanics and strategies. it kinda featurecreeps itself into a corner where its complexity doesn't really do anything to the gameplay except make it more annoying. the least interesting part in terms of gameplay, though the environment and dialog are pretty fun at times.
(oh yea, there's a section part in this third part where the game threatens to mess with or delete your computer files, and pulls info from your steam friends list. from what I've seen online, it won't actually do anything to your files or send weird messages to your friends or anything, but just having to look it up to make sure put me in a bad mood for the rest of the game.)

you'll never guess what happens next. it turns into another yet game where you're on a chess board, using rules from all 3 prievious games combined alongside a focus on one of the games from the second part. this one lasts like 5 minutes.

after that? you start playing yugioh or something i dunno. the ending is purely the arg stuff which I personally don't care for so it might as well not have one.

but yea the cabin part is very good, everything else ranges from okay to annoying, uninteresting or predictable. it does have chapter select once you beat it which is nice.

character customization is cool, though you realize it's pretty limited once you've played everything to a high level
that's all i think I'm qualified to criticize so bye
