Basil McFlair was a flamboyant performer who thrived on spectacle and shock, and his most infamous act was shaking rats. Dressed in glittering suits, he would violently grab one of his rats, shaking it mercilessly in the air, to the horror and fascination of his audience. His act was twisted, yet strangely captivating—each brutal shake sending the tiny creatures flailing in his hands, their bodies jerking uncontrollably. One afternoon, a wealthy merchant arrived in the village, eager to see the "rat-shaker" perform. As Basil held up Lady Whiskers, one of his favorite rats, and shook it with wild abandon, the crowd gasped in horror at the sight of the struggling creature. But the merchant, both disturbed and intrigued, offered Basil a fortune if he would take the act to the city.

The twist came as Basil, with a wicked smile, gripped the rat for one final shake. Suddenly, the tiny creature began to transform, its body elongating and shifting until, to the stunned merchant's horror, it became a woman—Gertrude, Basil’s bruised and broken wife. The crowd stood frozen as she collapsed to the ground, her body trembling from the abuse. Basil looked at her with a patronizing smile, as if nothing had changed. “It’s all for the show, love,” he said, casually brushing off the merchant's shocked expression. The truth was clear now: the rats weren’t rats at all—Gertrude had been forced to play the part of a helpless creature, violently shaken for the amusement of the crowd, all in the name of art.
