The Nika Riots occurred in 532 CE during the reign of Emperor Justinian and involved a violent conflict between two major chariot racing factions, the Blues (associated with Orthodox Christianity) and the Greens (linked to Monophysitism). The riots escalated into a major political and religious uprising, nearly overthrowing Justinian, and resulted in the destruction of much of Constantinople, including the original Hagia Sophia, which was later rebuilt by Justinian.
