The story of the Burger brothers – the men with the big heads, funny accents, and the hair! – is as popular today as it was when it appeared in a Saturday Evening Post newspaper in 1969.

Their "double burger" is considered a quintessentially American dish – a fast food staple invented in the 1950s. Yet as our food habits have changed, so has our relationship with the burger.

"Americans have always loved the double-burger," says Frank Seiberling, founder of Goodyear Tires in Akron, Ohio. "It's very American to have two pieces of meat."

Our relationship with the double burger is still as strong as ever. But as our population has grown, we've grown less and less interested in them.

"The double burger is a really classic American tradition, but no longer a hot food," says John "Red" Waggoner, the owner of a TGI Fridays in Atlanta. "I think the younger generation is more into the hamburger and less into the double burger."

As such, it is not the most popular burger on any menu.
