This game gets a bad rap but it's not a bad game. It deserves it's reputation as it is far and away the most non-Resident Evil game despite having a ton of the original characters and being a numbered entry in the franchise. To be clear, this game did not lose Capcom money, in fact it sold very well when it initially released but had less sales and more criticism than RE: 5 which showed Capcom that there were issues which allowed the franchise to get back on track with the more horror based RE: Revelations 1 & 2 and eventually RE:7 and beyond. For these reasons we may have this game to thank for the RE franchise being more alive now than ever.

I said this was not a bad game and it's true. It's not. In fact with the right approach this could easily be one of the most fun single player/co-op action shooters I've ever played. There are 4 campaigns each with characters that have distinct playstyles and gear with lots of replayability and a massive variety in enemies and bosses. Not to mention it's DLC's with other arcade like modes. The voice acting is overly dramatic but good and still carries some of the campy RE vibe. Far and away the best part of the game for me is some of the dodge/roll mechanics. While it may take some time to master, with some practice you get to a point where you can feel like John Wick in a mutant zombie apocolypse. You can can dodge roll in all directions and end up in posistion akin to to Tom Cruise in the movie "Collateral" where you're on your back, blasting away with your handgun as enemies try to get to you.

Has the game aged?

Yes, while impressive for it's time, the game definitely looks like its from the 7th generation era with the ai being perhaps it's most glaring issue, but in fairness, the companion ai was considered poor even when it first released over 12 years ago. I have never encountered any game breaking bugs.

Do I wish the game didn't exist?

Of course not. It's fun and I have good times with it. Thank goodness it does exist for the future of the series sake.

Do I wish the game had not been a numbered entry in the series?

Yes. It would have been better as some other one off with maybe one or two mainline characters. Making this a numbered entry kinda messes with the story in a way that makes you want to retcon the scope of what it affected.

Is it still a horror game?

Yes? Technically? It's definitely more like an action game with horror moments or elements. It's the least scary of the franchise but I still wouldn't play it around little kids.

Do I still play it today?

Heck. Yes. As a gamer and as a fan of the series it's a worthwhile game but even if you're not a fan of the series it's fun. Especially if you have a friend that you've been playing action coop titles with as it makes the game better and can lead to some hilarious and genuinely fun mindless moments. It's top tier coop stuff.

Overall, It's a real hoot when you accept the game for what it is which is a playable Hollywood B-movie action film. Whether you're new to the series, a series veteran or are just looking for an action game, I recommend it but mentally distance this experience from the rest of the franchise to avoid messing with your expectations for the other titles as they are for most part very different.
