It was an alright end to an otherwise good trilogy. Part of me feels like a large section of the game got scrapped suddenly as there's a massive jump in-game and it feels abnormal. It's also very buggy and the story isn't as intriguing as 2, 3 & 4. Good jumpscares though, 6/10. Good but not the best.

As of the time I'm writing this review, I am currently 5 hours away from 1000 hours total played. So for those who want a simple Y/N, YES, buy this game. It is a tone of fun.

Now for a proper in-depth view.
The Outlast Trials is a live-service model meaning it has periods where the game can feel slow, or you feel burnt out. For a new player this isnt an issue as you have plenty to do, but for us Day 1s, Early/Closed Beta players etc this is a prominent issue. This DOES NOT MEAN THE GAME IS DEAD.

Red Barrels are an Indie Dev team, updates take time however their communication isnt good... at all.

The game has had it's up's and down's, from the fun experience of Program X, to the butchered slop that is the current Rebirth system (Communal is really fun though), to the hell that was 2023 Geister. Let's go over these.

Positives:
The devs listen to the community feedback. Evidence of this is the addition of Custom Trials, Balance Changes (removing enemy spawns, nerfing the damage of heavy big grunts, Stun nerfs etc), adding challenging "Boss" variators such as No Running, Deep Burn etc.

The game recieves 'seasons' each quarter, and a game update (almost) monthly. These updates can be minimal hotfixes to address bugs, new MK-Challenges and Trial environments and even new enemies entirely, blessed be our overlord The Jaeger. These often come alongside new Events which introduce new gameplay mechanics.

The game has multiple game-modes to choose from such as Escalation, a rogue-like mode which scales in difficulty to an extent, or Custom Trials which allows you to combine variators to make hell on earth, looking at you KTR.

The game has an engaging, repeatable loop allowing replays of trials to always feel fresh. This includes multiple different environments and a wide selection of enemies with varying abilities. The game also supports a huge range of different loadouts.

The game has plenty, and I mean PLENTY of gore for you fiends into slashers. Oh and there's alot of Nudity (Nudity Filter is an option though)

Negatives:
Red Barrels are really bad at communicating with their players. Whilst it used to be worse, especially during early access, things still need improving imo.

There is a clean winner in which RIG to use as Stun just out-shines literally every RIG.

The rebirth system sucks. Before, you had to play through a selection of hand-picked hard trials called "Program X" and this was not only fun, but also tested your skills. They've since removed Program X and Rebirth is achieved by acquiring 100 Tokens from completing trials, allowing you to repeat the same trial over and over again. This system can stay, but I beg RB to add Program X back and let it reward 100 tokens upon completion.

There are several variators missing from Custom Trials and Escalation.

Whilst Outlast is and will be my main game for a long, long while, I can't help but worry for the longevity of the game given its live service aspect, but also how UTR the game is. But other than that, trials is an 8/10, amazing game with just a few flaws but they're outshined by the positives.

Only you can say what you deserve, free Whitehorn. Amelia for President 2028.

I'm bored so ♥♥♥♥ it, we roll. Time to write a review.

Overall, the game is an amazing experience, especially on your first play through. It's a game where you can easily immerse yourself in with the main character, the first person is a nice benefit. However, this doesn't mean the game has no flaws so let's get the negative parts out of the way:

The game has problems in terms of enemy scaling. On Village Of Shadows (The games hardest difficulties) I got softlocked at one point due to a lack of ammo. This caused to have to restart my entire game. To ensure it wasn't a verified "skill issue" I used a side mod to reveal enemy healthbars. After using every part of ammo in the arena, and buying as much as I could from Duke the boss was nowhere near dead.

The game is too lenient on Action instead of Horror

The boss fights feel lacking at times. There was only one boss on Village Of Shadows where I actually felt accomplished upon defeating them. I'm not sure if this is because I personally found the boss too easy, got extremely lucky with critical hits or just am an outright boring ♥♥♥♥♥ lol.

In my lovely opinion, the Factory part of the game felt rushed, almost like a filler to make up for something greater that was cut? Why didn't we get the option to team up with Karl Heisenberg? What happened to Ada Wong, as there were concept models for her to appear during the game. Why are they still insistent on hiding Ethan's Face, even though Capcom knows full-well we know what our monotone protagonist looks like.

And my biggest pet peeve, call me "horny" or whatever, but they killed off Lady Dimitrescu way, way too early. Angie + Donna should have been first, then you get a scene with Dommy Mommy. Then you kill Moreau, then finally the castle segment begins. Also, the castle was too short. For a massive ♥♥♥♥ off castle you'd expect... more. I know the castle like the back of my hand, for something that grande I shouldn't be able to memorise a layout so easily. There also should have been traps.

Ranting aside, let's talk about the games many perks:

It's a fun playthrough. That's what's most important, right?

You never feel too confused on where to go, and (for the most part) all enemies and bosses are balanced according to your difficulty.

The Duke and his many wares are a great, welcome addition that adds to both the replayability, gameplay and even depth of the game. Love ya' my big boy.

There's a 9'6 woman with booba.

There's a fine variety in enemies and even weapons. Even certain enemies have evolved forms of themselves Such as Armoured Lycans

The story is immersive and easy to understand. Angry Dad looks for his daughter in a village full of bad people, finds Mother Miranda who is doing some Voo-Doo ♥♥♥♥ with his daughter to revive her dead daughter. Chris "boulder-punch" Redfield finds Ethan Winter's presumably "dead" wife in a cell and you find out Mother Miranda was Oswald E. Spencer's mentor, some real neat ♥♥♥♥.

The game rewards you for exploration in many ways such as Collectables, Treasure and even a few "secret" boss fights for Steam Achievements and more treasure.

I give the game a 7 / 10 overall. Nothing is perfect and admittedly the game does have room for perfection but that doesn't make it a bad game. I recommend this game to anyone.

As messed up as this game may be, it's unironically really good and I 100% recommend, just make sure you have a strong stomach.
