back to the basics, with some sensical keepsakes from the current game, like gunboats for soldier and demo. Added some new old modes from way back, like VIP and 4-team, which is a lot of fun and something different for people that didn't play TFC or QWTF.

Optimized for modern day systems, has a FOV slider, lots of other QOL additions, looks better than the current game with some lighting and texture overhauls.

Basically if you don't like all the crazy items and abilities that have come to regular TF2, this is the game to play.

You can tell this game was made with love, pure and simple. The art style is beautiful, the music is beautiful, the story is thoughtful and poignant, the climbing is fun but not too easy as to be boring, and the survival mechanics are in a sweet spot of fun, as opposed to an arduous frustration that you must obey. The main purpose to the game is to climb, with you as the player being able to choose where each of your 4 limbs go as you ascend the mountain faces before you. But there is also a grand sense of whimsy and adventure, and the curious mind is also rewarded in the way of small secrets and lore-expanding moments as well. The total package just feels right, and is downright fun to play.

I'm pretty sure I've said it in a couple other reviews on Steam before, but indies truly are the savior of gaming. This game is fantastic, and is a breath of fresh air and originality. I am only 4 hours in but I hope there are 30 or 40 hours of this game. I also hope the studio is so successful with this game as to be able to expand upon it by the way of DLCs or maybe even something as ambitious a truly huge open world, where you could climb not only wherever you decide but with other people as well. The game itself is amazing as it, but its also an excellent starting point for the idea to be expanded upon.

its really not that bad, it should have Mixed reviews. People like to meme I guess.

They will make improvements, there is a decent foundation here. Like a 6/10 game.

Early Access Review
A very well-done 3D isometric action RPG. Don't be fooled by its presentation, its a soulslike -- just not in 3rd person perspective. There is a lot of passion and purpose built into this game, and you can tell how much of a love letter it is to Miyazaki and his franchise. The map design is absolutely spectacular. What seems like a regular top-down isometric action RPG level layout quickly turns into this weaving interlocking masterpiece with more verticality than I've ever seen in a top-down action RPG. Every game needs to study this game when considering level design. The combat is purposeful and punishing, just like in souls games. The physics are satisfying and make combat more fun. There are lots of weapon and build options, and playing with friends makes this an easy must-buy.

There is a lot of content here for a regular $60 game, let alone one much cheaper and only in Early Access. Very excited to see where this one goes, and the studios current plans are to release 1.0 sometime this year. I think even without getting to 1.0 there is enough here to satisfy any gamer that likes souls likes.

Souls game, but with friends without the need to use unsupported mods. Little different formula however, as it takes the closing-circle element from Battle Royale games and implements that into the game world. Basically you run around fighting small stuff and mini-bosses, gathering levels and equipment until your eventual fight against the biggest-baddy boss which your team leader selects before departure. The mini bosses along the way are formidable, but the end-bosses are definitely not a joke, and have been carefully designed to not be exploited by groups of 2 or 3 people.

Basically if you enjoy Souls games or Elden Ring, no reason not to buy this. You can even play it solo, although it isn't intended to be played that way and you will certainly have tougher go if you choose to play that way. Can't say how it is with random teammates, i've only played with a pre-made group and each round has been fun.

Its Battlefield like it should be. Maybe a little more CoD influence then the purists would like, maybe some of the maps are quite smaller than the purists remember, but overall its just a fun game. The sound and visual effects are incredible, really feels like what war really is once you are in the thick of it: chaos. Best Battlefield since Battlefield 1, I'd say.

The prime extraction shooter for the less hardcore gamer. Make no mistake, the PvE element needs to be taken seriously, and the penalty of death is high (lose everything on your person) which is usually standard for extraction shooters. However, the questing is fulfilling, there is lore to learn about, and in some cases when you run into other people, they won't be shoot-on-sight. Its been confirmed there is Agression-Based Matchmaking, so if you want, if you play peacefully for enough rounds, your rounds will mostly look like that in solos.

The main reason this game stands above so many, whether in its genre or not, is the presentation, the atmosphere, the sound design, the music, the animations, the level design, and the feel of combat. Everything about this game just oozes detail-oriented design and care. It just feels like a very well made game that is very easy to get immersed in, right off the bat.

The PvPvE nature of it may put off some players, but I would urge people that don't usually play multiplayer games (for the myriad of valid reasons there are to not do so) to give this game a try. The tension, excitement and emergent gameplay that comes from so many rounds is really not something you can easily find in other titles.

No game is without issues. Hit registration and desync is a prevalent issue as of time of this review. The devs have acknowledged they are working on it however. There also isn't really a clear goal, outside of completing the in-game quests and extracting out alive after completing said quests. Even then, many quests you can complete, die, then still get credit for once you are back in the menu. Getting all the top-tier loot I suppose could be a goal, and for many that probably is their driving force to play.

The reason not having a clear goal is an issue is it can lead to boredom in people, which usually means making their own fun, which usually means having fun at the expense of other people. Extraction point camping and people running to spawn points to essentially spawn camp, are both frustrating issues. But no multiplayer game is without these kinds of toxic issues.

Overall, you can't go wrong and especially for $40 . Its probably not going to get GOTY because at the end of the day, even though its a more casual extraction shooter, but nature of being an extraction shooter, its still a harder game to play and potentially frustrating one if you die a lot and can't seem to build up a good stash of items. It is however certainly multiplayer GOTY, by far.

Most of the usual fixings of a survival game are here; have to manage your thirst and heat levels, lots of crafting and advancing your way to better gear through different tier levels. Each section of the map is intended for a specific tier, more or less. Last but not least, base building as well.

Whats interesting is the semi-MMO nature to it. So servers themselves don't hold many people, so coming across another person is pretty special, at least in the early and mid game. Once its late game there are people fighting over resources and lots of activity in the higher level areas. The cities in the game have an MMO feel to them as well, with people running back and forth and people idling standing in the streets and such. Another big separation from typical survival games is the inclusion of a story, many NPCs in which to converse with, and a very large questing system that goes from optional all the way to essential. It really adds a much needed layer to the genre.

There is a big emphasis on joining a guild and doing whats called the Landsraad which are a set of like global goals to achieve, and you get big rewards if you accomplish them. But they are pretty much impossible to do alone, you need to be in a guild. Lots of drama and debate is currently festering the community of this game about the end-game, as you spend your entire time playing a PVE survival game, solo or coop, then all of a sudden the end game is a PVP extraction 3rd person shooter/dogfighting game in ornithopters (basically helicopters if you don't know Dune lore).

But even if you don't like the end of the game, the 80 or 90% that comes before it is really great no matter what type of player or playstyle you prefer. Its fun solo or with friends. The gameplay loop is enjoyable and will appeal to any survival/crafting fan. The combat is good enough, there are a few different classes to spec into (and you can cross-spec which is very interesting), and the atmosphere of the Dune movies is very much embedded within this game. They did a great job making this game feel like it belongs in the Dune universe.

Definitely recommended, even if you are unsure about all the debate around the state of the end game.

Strikes a more even balance than its main competitor, Overwatch. That is probably the biggest callout... Not having to be forced to role queue makes for more interesting team comps, like OW had before they forced role queue in comp. The maps are better designed as well in Rivals.

The character synergies are a nice touch as well, and by that I mean (if you aren't familiar at all with the game) there are synergies that 2 or 3 heroes that have lore relationships or friendships or whatever it is have, which gives them a special ability that they wouldn't get otherwise. I think other team based games could learn from synergies.

Downsides are the 3rd person makes it more casual, get a lot of corner-peaking which is annoying. The game in general is more casual and less deep I think overall as well, just by the way that it plays out. At the end of the day, whichever team ults last will come out of important fights alive. But that is more of a genre issue than an issue particular to this game, to be fair.

Its fun and it has the benefit of having a very beloved and long-lived franchise behind it, and its free so, you can't really go wrong if you like small-team-based shooters.

This game is really great, and has a "one more run" feel to it that will keep you playing and playing... I have probably 40 or 50 hours on my phone, but wanted it on PC as well because I like it so much, and already have another 12 hours on PC in just a few days. Basically you make poker hands and try to beat the score for the round, but the beauty of the game is that its not a game about poker, its a game about jokers...

You get 5 joker slots and they vastly change how you will play the game. With the right jokers, playing high card or a pair is suddenly more powerful than a royal flush or 4 of a kind. But, with some other joker builds, royal flush or 4 of a kind is devastatingly powerful. With 150 jokers total in the game, there are endless combinations of joker builds you could make to try to get through the levels.

The big caveat is, however, that the jokers come up randomly (or sometimes not at all, and instead other enhancement type cards show up instead for that round) in the shop after each completed round. So you can't just aim for the same joker build that you like or have seen on YouTube to be powerful and OP; you have to work with what you got and strategize to figure out how you will beat future rounds.

The music is great, the art style is fun and the game as a whole just has a cool vibe to it. You really can't beat it for its low price. A game of passion and it shows. I don't think it should have been in any GOTY talks, but its definitely in the top 5 list of games in 2024, easily.
