Shantae: Risky's Revenge is a mediocre game, failing in many of the things it sets out to do. The game tries to reinvent the Metroidvania wheel with a poor layering system (where you can go to the "background" of the area and vice-versa) and a confusing map that attempts to follow the same logic. Furthermore, the maps of the interior areas are completely nonexistent, leaving you in the dark to explore these areas in a labyrinthine scheme, without a real sense of reward even after completing the area (like a map), forcing you to memorize the same tedious paths that you will need to traverse over and over again.

The level design is terrible. I felt that the game areas themselves were also very empty. The enemies are positioned in bad places, with totally unfair and broken hitboxes. There is little enemy variety, and the bosses are too easy and lack any charisma. The platforming sections are also quite bad, with several blind spots where, if you fall into a hole, in addition to losing HP, you'll return to the beginning of the area, which isn't difficult to do due to the monkey's movement ability.

The fact that the "old man who saves" doesn't restore HP and doesn't have fast travel (common features in Metroidvanias) often makes the game frustrating because you have to move around gigantic screens with nothing interesting just to save your progress.

The fast travel in this game also bothers me a lot. They're usually located in completely opposite points from where you need to go, and there's ALWAYS an area in between to get in your way. Want to go to the city? You'll have to go through a huge area before it. There's no fast travel directly to the main city or even to the adjacent one.

I recognize that there might be limitations due to it being a game originally for the Nintendo DS, such as the hitbox problems with enemies, but the horrible level design with poorly positioned enemies, along with the awful layering system and the game map, left much to be desired. The feeling I got was of playing an open-world game that is totally empty and soulless, only in 2D.

If you push yourself a bit, you can still get some lighthearted fun out of it, but if you're aiming for 100% of the achievements, you'll need to play the same game at least twice to get the game's four "different" endings (which just show a different random piece of art for each ending), which is quite frustrating. Especially since sometimes some achievements won't be unlocked due to the various bugs the game has.

General Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I recommend the game, but with caveats.

Even though it differs from the visual style of the Momodora series, I found the game itself to be very beautiful and captivated me from the beginning, but I soon realized how repetitive and boring it was becoming. The enemy variety is very small, the patterns and difficulty are ridiculously easy to learn, and there is no real challenge from the beginning to the end of the game. Practically 99% of incense is expendable (with the exception of healing ones) and the weapons that the game offers are ridiculous. There is no reason to change weapons when they all have the same damage (with the exception of one that is weaker than the others), and their attack patterns only vary 2 or 3 times. The game's music is also nothing outstanding and the level design is weak and leaves a lot to be desired.

One thing that was very evident was that they tried to put a lot of Soulslike elements into the game in a way that didn't match the style of the series (despite this being a spin-off). I feel like it was all very rushed, untested and unrefined.

It's worth noting that I started playing Minoria shortly after playing (and 100% completing) Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight, so comparing both games was inevitable. While in Momodora: RUtM I enjoyed finishing the game more than once, including in Insane Mode, here there is no real incentive to finish the game a second time to get the second ending, which makes the second playthrough frustrating. The map in New Game+ starts completely open, but although this helps, there is no indication of which areas you have already passed through in this second playthrough, which ends up confusing the player a little.

Despite everything, I still recommend the game and I think it's worth at least one playthrough, as you'll hardly want to revisit the game again.

Short but an extremely good game. The graphics are minimalist and very beautiful, and the color scheme is magnificent. It really delivers what it promises and will give you a pretty decent amount of fun.

Bro Tip: SHIFT makes the character run. I spent a good amount of time on the 3rd level until I realized xD

Congratz Ubisoft, you turned a long time customer into a guy who will keep playing your games, but will make sure you don't make another dime from it :) win-win
