Half-Life is one of those games that just absolutely kills at displaying how good game design is timeless.

Half-Life still hits like it just dropped yesterday, which is wild considering it’s old enough to rent a car. You boot it up expecting a history lesson and suddenly it’s 4 AM. No cutscenes, no hand-holding, just you, a crowbar and a science experiment that went catastrophically wrong. Back then it quietly rewrote the rules: seamless storytelling without breaking control, scripted events instead of canned cinematics, enemies that flank and react and environmental puzzles that actually trust the player. Stuff the industry still leans on today. The pacing is immaculate, the atmosphere is pure tension and the world feels alive in a way many modern games still struggle to match. Sure, a ladder might remind you of its age, but that’s part of the charm. This isn’t just a classic, it’s a masterpiece. Everything else is still chasing this blueprint.
