An unavoidable aspect of any card game is that if your deck isn't competitively viable, you're less likely to win. Such a thing is a natural consequence of some cards and decks being better than others. In modern Yu-Gi-Oh, however, if your deck isn't competitive you don't get to play the game.

Creating a game in Game Dev Tycoon basically involves 3 steps:

1) Buying the best resources and technology you can afford (3D graphics, improved user interface, marketing, etc.
2) Conceptualizing the game by picking a topic and a genre
3) Devloping the game by adjusting several sliders to determine how much time and effort you put into each aspect of the game (graphics, sound, story, etc.)

The problem is that steps 2 and 3 often yield completely unexpected results and don't make much sense at all. For example, music and sounds are considered "not important" for the RPG genre and putting any decent amount of resources into sound will result in a negative reaction from reviewers and low sales, despite how much acclaim RPGs get for having good music in the real world.

Topic/genre combinations often don't make sense either. Some combinations are obvious enough (racing/simulation, sports/simulation, space/action) but many aren't. How was I supposed to know that City RPGs are destined to fail or that Hospital Simulations are a great idea? You have the option of seeing all previously unlocked hints even when you start a new game, but when you know which games do well and which won't it defeats the purpose of playing.
