As of 2025 May 26, the game supports Linux desktop systems properly. I'm glad the devs are willing to listen to players.
The gameplay itself feels quite a bit different from the original Splitgate, but personally, I like some of the additions. I feel like with some extra balancing the abilities could be made to feel less overpowered compared to portalplay, but that's what a beta is for. I'm pretty hopeful, so I'm changing my review to positive for the time being, and I'll see how the situation evolves.

Old review below:
The anticheat does not let you run the game on linux on anything other than a Steam Deck, and none of the workaround from protondb work anymore, it always fails with "Couldn't start the game executable.". I was hoping this "trend" was limited to gacha games only, but apparently every single anticheat is doing it now.

I agree with Player()ne in that there is no good reason to be toxic about what software you run on your computer lol
dont get me wrong, i will always insult microsoft winblows but im not gonna talk trash to its users who just use what they know.

Why is this comment section so toxic? Imagine arguing about which os is better when they both accomplish the same thing just in different ways

Linux is harder to setup but has better overall performance but is pretty bad for multiplayer games because cheating is way easier on linux.

Windows can have some significant performance drops, but that can be fixed if you just delete some bloatware and targeted ads. As well as that it is easy to use and you don't need a guide to understand it. Because it is more locked down cheaters are less common.

THEY BOTH PLAY GAMES. That's really all that matters.

Funny how people will defend Microsoft no matter how much they slow down your system with pre installed AI spyware, ads and other bloat they force on you but charge you to use.

Up until they're ending support for win 10 i've been a Windows user my entire life and im honestly ashamed of that.
Ubisoft dont want you to own your game while Microsoft dont want you to own your PC.

Linux dont suck. It can run demanding games like Crysis and Cyberpunk.
Its companies that bribes software to be exclusive that sucks.

In the FAQ the devs say that Linux support is planned, but not for the beta.
They are testing it internally tho.

However it works on a VM

Just use Windows, if you want to play games.

People dont understand, this game is compatible with linux, because it works with steam deck, but the developers purposefully blacklisted linux players that arent on a steam deck. They went through the effort of making it work on linux but then decided that they dont want actual linux users to play, but they still want the steamdeck compatibility tag. This would be like if doom dark ages or indiana jones were programmed to only work with nvidia cards, even though radeon is capable of running those games.

Im from the future and have great news: There will be 99% less free to play live service slop like this released in the next 10 years because of how horrible the idea is.

Games that actually want real players and actual success will charge an entry fee and actually pay QA Testers just like before, they also support Linux just fine because anyone can cheat regardless of the operating system. A computer is a computer after all and Linux deserves its spot due to the community effort to make itself an option.

Until then, we can enjoy the 95% of the rest of games at our disposal that support Linux just fine. For example: Warframe, Guild Wars 2, THE FINALS, you get the idea.
