tl;dr: The devs have made every effort possible to squeeze as much money out of the player base as possible.

ETA dec 7th: The DLC is now affecting players that don't have it. Multiple of my villagers have items only found in the DLC as their favorite items such as Bumblestone and Glowing flowers, leaving me wholly unable to give them gifts for the day.

Bought for $30 on the promise that it would come out of early access as free to play. Today, their first major update dropped at an additional $30, for 25% of the content we got from the initial purchase, half of which was promised at launch and later changed to be DLC. Gameloft has gone money hungry, and until this game releases with the promises they made on launch, this will remain a negative recommendation. There isn't enough replay-ability for them to be charging this much money. Your character only levels up to level 40, it's somehow an even slower trickle for store items than Animal Crossing. At least with ACNH, you can manipulate the game the check the shop multiple days. This game will break entirely if you try to do that. The devs have made every effort possible to squeeze as much money out of the player base as possible.

At this point, Slime Rancher 2 has been in development/early access for over 2 years. The devs are adding cosmetics and decorations rather than core features that are already present in Slime Rancher 1.

One of the most requested features of this game is multiplayer. There are no in game tools to assist with how large the island is, and there is no one else to help. By the time I finish feeding my slimes and collecting my plorts, I need to start over again because it's taken me so long, that the slimes I fed first are now out of food again. It's extremely difficult to manage the farm, make money, and explore the world as it gets added. There's too much going on, and in a bad way. Stop adding fluff and add actual content!
