After finishing the game, here are my thoughts. Sorry if I'm a bit ramble-y or misspell things, I'm sick with the flu.

CAMPAIGN: The game campaign is around the time they advertise. I took a little longer with it because I was trying not to complete the game too quickly. I think it would be very easy to finish this in about 15 hours if you're very focused and don't get side tracked.
As far as the writing goes... I think some people were expected the story to get much darker so I understand why some people were disappointed. To me, though, the story had a nice mix of seriousness with some really goofy moments to keep things light. My main issue is with the advertised hints regarding the story vs what we got, which I'll get to later.

STEAM DECK:
I played this game almost entirely on the Steam Deck. Didn't get any glitches. Things were pretty smooth for the most part. My big pet peeve with steam verified games is when it forces me to use the touch pad and that never happened in this game! So I loved that part of it.

GAMEPLAY:
Here's where things sort of fall apart for me.
The emptiness of the game is super obvious and I can't help but wonder if content got cut so it could be turned into a DLC.
- I would have liked the store management part to be just a tad more intricate, especially late game when it felt like I was just standing there waiting for days to end so I could progress. The last 1/3 of the game really got dull.
- Some characters are hinted at having backstories that could lead to quests, only for nothing to happen.
- You're stuck all game living in a trailer, with no options to move or really do much with the space. You can buy furniture, but it doesn't do anything and mainly just clutters the small space of the trailer. I personally think there was a missed opportunity here, like having crystal pieces give the player passive effects since the lady who sells them is so insistent they are magical.
- There are buildings around the town and the woods that are falling apart or left abandoned. They never get fixed or used. I suspect these areas would be used in DLC, but that thought just ended up annoying me by the end of the game when I realized how much is left unused during the main game.
- For all the complaining characters make about us expanding, it really never like we did much -- especially not enough to earn such an overreaction from the town. I don't want to spoil the story, but... it was a bit disappointing how little the limits are pushed. If you tell me in a game description that I can "make lifelong enemies" by what I choose to do in the game, I want to see that happen.

CHOICES:
This gets its own section because it's important to me and its one of the reasons I bought the game.
If you read the description of this game and got the idea that you'd have any choice in the story, don't get your hopes up. It's weird, because the description of the game includes phrases like "Will you pursue endless profits, or find a way to benefit everyone in Blomkest?" and "navigating community dynamics" which made me think I'd get to decide if I wanted to be a filthy capitalist scum or make some sort of community utopian grocery store. (Hint: I wanted to be a filthy capitalist scum.) I was promised life long enemies. Where are they? Give me drama. Give me crazy choices.
But no, you are never given the ability to decide what to do. Instead, you are pushed into doing things you don't want to do, some stuff happens that makes you do more stuff you don't want to do, and then eventually the game ends. It's all very much on rails and even when your character tries to protest to certain choices, it happens anyway.
Only the very last decision in the game matters, which is kind of lame because the game is literally about to end when it happens.

CONCLUSION
I liked Discounty, but misleading marketing (in my opinion, maybe I just read too much into it) and all the other issues I listed are why I'm giving it a negative review. Having read the various updates and news the devs have put out, they do seem to hint that they want to add more to the game. I hope they get to! It's obvious there's a lot of details and care put into certain parts of the game, I think it could be polished into something really special.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure I have it in me to go back and replay the story if they adjust any of that. All I can say is that if they plan on adding more player choices to the story, it had better not be paywalled behind a DLC.

As someone who was obsessed with Nintendogs while growing up, I've always been desperately searching for a game just like it.
This game isn't a perfect spiritual successor. There are definitely a few features I wish they had (competitions please!) But it's got the wacky cosmetics, the weird toys, and a strange little story line I hadn't expected. I'm a quest right now to build a greenhouse for the dog island. Wild.
Collect cute dogs, take them on walks, do some fun mini games, and unlock new gameplay features as you play. Overall? I'm into it. 4/5 stars.

Pros:
Enjoying the game so far. Lots to do. Exploring the world is fun and there's a lot of little side paths you can take to find hidden things. Game runs pretty well other than two crashes out of 14 hrs of gameplay.

Cons:
Let me kiss the fish man

Early Access Review
Really fun game! A bit simple at the moment due to it being early access, but its a great game for zoning out and relaxing. Love the character artwork too!

Genuinely a super fun DLC. The level designs for the hives are so cool and way more in-depth than I thought they were going to be. They are legit basically whole new maps to explore.
I love the new cleaners, the new weapons, the new cards... honestly just a fantastic addition to the game!

A pretty fun management game that'll keep you entertained for at least a few hours. After beating the main story line and unlocking all the card sets, the game starts to feel very lifeless. I'm hoping there will be future updates that add more content to the end game.
