If you've played Half-Life and want to reexperience that absolute masterpiece with updated graphics and gameplay, or if you've never played Half-Life and are kinda turned off by the way it looks and plays, get this. Not once will you regret it.
The recognizable ambients and bigger ammount of detail delivers an even more immersive experience. There are small changes to how the game plays (other than basic movement), but nothing too harsh.
I will say though, the combat, for someone that's used to Half-Life 2 is a little hard. AI improvements have the HECU soldiers smarter than ever, and it is slightly frustrating. If having trouble, absolutely lower your difficulty, since this game IS harder than HL1.
And then there's Xen. I'm far, far away from saying it's bad, it looks stunning and plays perfectly, but I feel like Crowbar Collective have gone a little too far with "reimagining" it. It's understandable to want a more remarkable experience by making it longer, but some parts are just too long, especially the Gonarch battle, that originally had two or three arenas, feels more like a chase than a battle (especially having pretty long idle periods). Interloper is okay, I really like how the game took a Valve-ish path on showing that the Vortigaunts are enslaved and pacific, but the "factory" levels just feel unnecessary, unlike certain new mechanics and looks, such as the suit-charging crystals and the presence of human tech on Xen. The long jump module follows a more modern approach about the double pressing the spacebar, but I really think there should be an option to change that back to the classic crouch-jump (though some areas require you to crouch-jump at normal heights), as some people bind jump to the mousewheel and it's hard to only scroll once.
Nihilanth is a bit confusing. The adding of two sets of healing crystals feels a little too out of place, and it's just too hard. Nihilanth's attacks are overpowered (though they were a little weak on the original game), and it's also confusing to find a strategy that works.
TLDR: Earth levels are great, but battle is a little hard. Xen is too long (took me 10h, and an extra 30min from having to replay a map because of a glitch), but acceptable at most.
