Hands down the best execution of the "coop with in-game voice chat" genre while still being super fun to play solo. The constant progression with in-game cosmetics and the achievements/badges you can actually show off in-game is phenomenal, and the higher ascents challenge your gamesense and reward you with cool sashes. The new content they added through MESA and ROOTS has also been nothing short of spectacular additions to an already very replayable game.

I'm a bit split on this game. I do think the story and atmosphere are incredibly captivating and great, but the gameplay often frustrates to the point of anger. The required usage of the map to navigate is a pretty cool idea, but a lot of missions have incredibly cheap shootouts, with the second half especially boasting insta-kill shotgun/Thompson enemies placed in corners you'd never know about unless you died to them. The very awkward shooting doesn't help matters at all and you can easily get stunlocked if one of them even takes out as much as 3 HP while you're trying to aim at the guy and going out of cover, because Tommy really likes to shoot the wall unless you're fully in the open. The checkpoints also don't help matters, as they're spaced out enough that if you die almost at the end of a shootout or make a mistake, you go all the way back to the beginning.

What also doesn't help is how vague the objectives are. In the second half I had to straight up look up how to beat some of them, because there is absolutely nothing to tell you exactly how to do a mission in some parts. The game requires you to do each mission exactly how it wants and if you deviate in the slightest, you either fail or get killed. I understand this game was in development well before GTA III and has a different structure in mission progression, but even that game has a lot more freedom in mission approaches than this game does. I usually give old games leeway because of their age, but a lot of what Mafia does wrong is placed more in the design aspect than mechanics.

Overall, I still think the game has appeal in its great atmosphere and story, but the gameplay leaves me with a sour taste and very hesitant on ever revisting it. I would not recommend it to newcomers of the series. If you want to be captivated by the 1930s Americana atmosphere of the game and its compelling story, I would suggest opting towards the Definitive Edition instead.

Beyond being a great shooter, the recent Anniversary Update made the game even better than it already was.

Not joking when I say it's peak fiction.

Incredibly odd and wonderful on-rails shooter adventure. This game is known for it's quite complex story, but it actually can be understood given enough playthroughs and interpretation. Even if you think it's too complex for you, you should STILL play this game. There is literally NOTHING like it anywhere in the video game industry and it's an amazing experience.

Early Access Review
The developers are horribly disconnected from the playerbase and don't listen to any feedback, which results in a worse product for everyone. I already saw the addition of VRC+ as incredibly disconnected. A whopping 10 dollars a month for basic features is a scam and I don't care if the money goes to the servers or drugs for the devs that they take daily in order to be as blind and ignorant as they are to player feedback and the player base as a whole.

But then they go ahead and announce their plans to add EAC. A crappy resource hog with the most terrible anti cheat on the market, added purely to stop people from actually making the game playable with the wonderful community mods for accessibility and QoL. The devs know that they can't compete with the modders, so rather than cooperating with them or endorsing their creations (like OSRS with RuneLite), they just blacklist them outright, while not fixing the actual issue of malicious mods made to crash the players game (which is what they supposedly added EAC for) because the bad actors will just bypass it anyway. In other words, the devs are jealous that they can't make their game good because they're horribly incompetent, so they just block any competition while not fixing the real issues with the game.

This is my last straw. I already stopped having fun with this game a year or two ago, but the devs are so incompetent and garbage, that I've had enough with this awful game. Play Neos or ChilloutVR instead and don't bother with this game.

VRC devs: Go ♥♥♥♥ yourselves.

Don't get confused by my review being set to "Not Recommended". This game is very good and is one of my favorite games of all time (as you can tell by my playtime) but I cannot recommend this release.

The primary reason is that the Steam version of San Andreas simply sucks. It's missing music, it has many bugs, it runs like trash, etc. It's pretty much worse than the original 2005 version in a lot of ways, which means that if you want the best experience, you'll need to downgrade it and get a couple of mods to make it a very enjoyable experience. Personally, I don't mind modding my game, but I can imagine many people probably won't bother modding or even know about how bad this release is, which would make them go ahead and mod it. It's been 7 years since the last patch and they still sell this busted version on Steam without fixing it. Awful.

There's also Take Two being scumbags and shutting down various mod projects, but other reviews already talked about it at length, so i'll spare you the talk here.

Simply put, don't buy it on Steam. I recommend you get a used copy somewhere. If you don't have a DVD drive or if you absolutely NEED it on Steam, then downgrade this bad release to the original 1.0 version and get the mods. Even then, I wouldn't recommend supporting Take Two financially, so be wary of that fact if you decide to buy it on Steam.

If you'd like to know more specifics about why the Steam version is terrible, I highly recommend this comparison video made by Vadim M: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XESrzw62rlQ

But I'll add onto it and say that NO, it's NOT Dolphin repackaged. If you stopped believing random strangers saying bulls**t and actually looked at the files yourself, you will see files from the Switch port of the game (like music and videos) which in fact AREN'T in the original Wii version. So no, it's not Dolphin, it's a port of the Switch port.

Now, onto the actual game review.

No More Heroes is an amazing game. I beat it myself multiple times on the Wii and it's one of my all-time favorite games. How is the port like, then?

I understand all the frustrations with the issues and bugs of the game, and I do think that they should fix it soon, but despite all that, I'd still recommend picking this version up. Yes, currently it has issues (like I said before), but I beat this game myself with only one gameplay-related issue to speak of, and that was the baseball minigame being quite broken, but otherwise, it's a perfectly fine way to enjoy the game, and it was mostly smooth sailing for me. I'd say wait for the patches to get released, but if you really want to play it now, there's no problem with that.

Controls are smooth, the hack-and-slash portion of the gameplay is fun, the soundtrack is bliss for my ears, and the story is great. If you're curious for a more in-depth look at this Suda51 classic, I recommend GhenryPerez's YouTube video about this game from his Deadly Individualism series.

Need I say more? My playtime should be more than enough to tell you how good the game is.
