Very well made game. Great multiplayer community, most played games are Secret Hitler and Codenames. If you're looking to make a custom board game(as I did) there are easy resources to use that allow you to implement any sort of image file, into cards, boards, and anything else to make a functional and fun game. Highly reccomend.

EU4 was the first paradox grand strategy game that I played. It is thrilling at times, disappointing at others. Games are an emotional roller coaster.
As far as Paradox's scummy DLC policy, the only dlc that I think you really need are common sense and art of war, and if you buy these and the base game at sale time, it's $30 for an absolute gem of a strategy game.

It has a very sophisticated campaign feel, which is sometimes annoying, but also what makes it uniquely fun. I bought with all dlc for $30, and it's not the worst purchase I've ever made, but I would say if you can get it on sale for under $20, it's definitely very worth it.
