my only gripe with this game, after playing some spin off games/games from different series, is that i think the maps and events are relatively boring. with that said, in terms of pure gameplay, this is a fantastic time and a great entry point into the musou genre.

despite being tagged as "unknown" for steam deck, it works out of the box.

controller support isn't great because you just get keyboard glyphs and are kind of left to guess which button does what. which is crazy because this game came out on console, so the lack of full controller support is weird.

with that said, i didn't have a super fun time playing this. i love Warriors games in general, but had never tried an empires title. it's a weird mix between warriors gameplay and grand strategy, and the latter does not stick the landing at all. could be specific to this entry, but between stratagems, the seemingly useless management and the possible paths you can take, i would very much rather play a mainline or spinoff title that focuses on set scenarios with fun and memorable maps. this did not feel like it had any of this.

i would say this is an easy skip unless you absolutely want to experience this game.

the knightling is what i would affectionately describe as a gamecube or ps2 game. vibrant with colors, restrained in its scope but fantastic in its execution and gameplay, with a ton of heart to back it up.

don't be too fooled by the open-world tag or how people discuss this game : at its core, the knightling offers a map with the usual suspects (towers, sidequests, collectibles) but it's all very restrained. you aren't going to do 200 sided quests. you aren't going to collect 500 artifacts. you aren't going to activate 75 towers. it offers a concise experience, with a focused narrative and a strong layer of charm to tie it all together, with some fantastic movement and fun platforming.

as a weaker point i would highlight the combat - though i had no personal issue with it and found it serviceable (and even enjoyable) - but the average person will expect some epic combat, especially based off the trailers. while you can pull some cool moves, your arsenal is limited even with upgrades, and you are not about to pull combo clips to put in a youtube compilation. it has more in common with something like zelda than devil may cry.

with all that said, playing it on steam deck wasn't too great - performance isn't too hot on that front.

a strong recommendation if you can temper your expectations and aren't expecting a 200 hours game. a shame it did not seem to get more visiblity than it seemed to...!

rez infinite really is 2 games : the original game and a brand new area (area x). they come from 2 era of different design, but both are excellent. amazing synesthasia experience. though i would give a slight edge to area x and wish there was more of it.

my only regret is not playing rez earlier.

it's half life with a fresh coat of paint. what half life does well this still does it well, but it also will not change your less favorite parts. i still hate on a rail and surface tension. the amount of fights still moderately annoys me. i still don't like xen but i admire the effort to remake it, so i can chalk that up to the feng shui being bad and xen being cursed no matter how it's remade. ultimately these aren't grievances with black mesa but moreso half life, they just carry over here. on the black mesa side of things, not a huge fan of how they remade the water (where it's basically impossible to see past the surface unless you're in it) but whatever.

it probably isn't going to convert you if you didn't like half life in the first place but if you want to replay half life but don't want to boot up the original this is a fine alternative.

a solid experience. great stages that never hesitate to present a new gimmick backed by a phenomenal soundtrack. either can be played as a one-sitting game or as a scoring experience, but worth experiencing regardless. a transcendent experience.

i would say it loses a couple points because retrying stages with cutscenes isn't great, and there's no accessibility options. and by accessibility i mean, actual accessibility - do not play this game if you are photosensitive, there's no toggle of any sort for flashing lights and there are a lot of those!

do not regret playing this game but i do regret taking so long to play it.

a drier baldur's gate 1, but with more combat to make up for it. playing all the infinity engine games together kind of highlights why icewind dale isn't talked as much as its contemporaries (balur's gate and planescape torment).

a perfectly fine video game if you crave more combat in that engine, a good companion piece to the other games, but other than that fairly unremarkable and an easy skip unless you have nostalgia for it or want to see what the whole shebang is about. especially because all the quirks of the engine (terrible pathfinding and finicky inventory management) are here in full force.

clever, witty and funny. a game better experienced fully blind committing to your choices and decisions. unfortunately i cannot do anything bad because i refuse to disappoint kim kitsuragi.

the best game i can't recommend spending money on because of what happened internally at the studio. if you get it, at least get it on sale.

i prefer the changes made to the bfg edition but over 20 years later and it's still an outlier in the doom lineage of game. still think you should give it a shot if you never have!

witchspring 3 refine kind of sits in a weird spot. while coming out (way) before the remake of the first game, at its core this is an upgraded version of a mobile game. you can absolutely feel everything that made it a mobile game. yet as i said it exists in a world where the remake exists (and is quite good), which is a way more finely-tuned version of everything on offer here, from the systems to the controls to the presentation.

if you played the remake first, this game will immediately be familiar to you in its systems. if you haven't, witchspring is a little weird because it doesn't work like a traditional rpg in terms of leveling - your rewards are stats. which is cool but also very funny because the game is tuned in such a way that it's very easy to outgrind the game. it can be an issue but i feel like it isn't, because if you are looking for a difficult RPG i can recommend you dozens of them, and this is not what the witchspring series is about.

so even all of that considered, is witchspring 3 still up your alley? well if you are considering it, it probably already is. there is still some jank present (controls sometimes are a bit finnicky and there's weird things like your character walking a bit forward after letting go, you cannot mash through dialogue, things are highlighted very much like a mobile game) but to me most of that is made up by the fact that the team behind these games loves doing it. and i find myself terribly endeared by the series and its characters to the point i am willing to overlook or work through the flaws.

if you aren't looking for the next massive rpg series that will blow up and are entirely fine with something restrained, especially at its lower price point, this will probably be up your alley. if you played the remake of 1 before this are considering this, you are in for a familiar experience - the training, the crafting, how the world functions... there is some clunkiness attached to it, but with a lot of the spirit that makes the series special.

i can only hope one day the other game in the series will at least be available on steam, if not get remakes on par with the first game. there's something a little special here and i like it a lot.
