I completed the game 100% in my 2026 playthrough, and I can confidently say I loved it. Even after 20+ years, it’s still very enjoyable to play. The atmosphere here feels special compared to newer HD titles, it has that classic 3D GTA vibe that’s really hard to replicate. The city feels alive and the dynamic weather additionally affects how you perceive it. It may feel a bit depressing at times, but to me that’s what makes the story work.

The missions can be a real pain in the ass. They’re not astronomically difficult, but rather annoying af, often forcing you to replay them multiple times just to figure out the most optimal approach, like optimizing your route, dealing with long drives, or escaping the ridiculously aggressive cops. That said, I feel like there were quite a few missions where you can diviate from the proposed approach and use your own creative one.

Side missions such as emergency/police/fireguard, packages, rampages, import/export are boring and underwhelming. The rewards suck too, except packages and police imo. The Portland missions are also sometimes impossible because of mafia, which feels ridiculously unbalanced. I wish after completing rampages we could get rid of all of them...

It’s a bit disappointing that there isn’t much to do in the city, and money becomes useless once you unlock all weapons from hidden packages. It's good to see that these aspects were significantly improved in later GTA titles, so I think it's forgivable. Also, I personally hated Shoreside Vale.. Idk there’s just something deeply sad about it; it feels empty, distant, and a bit artificial.

Overall, considering this was Rockstar’s first 3D GTA game, it’s incredibly impressive what they managed to achieve back in 2001. The ideas and mechanics they introduced ended up affecting an entire generation of open-world games, and it's cool to see where it all stems from.

To me, this is a solid 8/10.

Like city building simulators? Have a decent CPU, more than 12 GB of RAM and enough free disk space? Then this game is for you! First, you should get the game and all the DLC's (except for Natural Disasters), then download a bunch of assets and mods from the workshop that will help you to do normal things that pure vanilla game won't let you do, and after these simple steps you can start spending your life building that perfect (or not) city and posting its screenshots on Reddit or wherever.
