Despite being an older game, it still holds up well and offers an enjoyable experience. So many good memories playing Day of Defeat through the years, from 1.3 beta to Source. Spent a lot of evenings with my Dad playing this when I was younger.

The player base may be a bit small now, but there are still a handful of populated servers with some great communities and good times to be had. One can only dream that DoD would receive the same love as CS:GO/CS2 with updates.

The Winds of War update has added a lot of great changes and keeps pushing it in a solid direction. Missions are way more dynamic now. A lot of quests chain into the next step, so you’re not constantly flying back to base unless you’re turning in items. If your faction controls any COBs, those make great respawn and resupply points which helps keep things moving.

The AI feels noticeably smarter. They’ll go prone, use cover, and shoot at where they last saw you. They don’t have x-ray vision through bushes anymore (well, for the most part lol), but they can still hit you from a distance, just not always accurately. Slower, more careful play really pays off, as it always has with this game. The updated ballistics system is a big improvement. Bullets can go through walls, and ammo types matter more than before.

Gear degradation adds another layer to think about. Once a weapon or armor piece hits zero durability, it’s unusable. You can send stuff out for repair (standard takes a couple hours), or you can do a quick repair that trades speed for long term quality. It forces you to rotate gear and plan ahead a bit more.

Weather and the day-night cycle now affect gameplay. Rain impacts visibility for both you and the AI, and wearing a hat or goggles actually helps. The day and night phases are pretty well balanced, and it’s a cool touch that AI use flashlights when they’re actively searching. Sound design has also improved. It’s easier to pick up on what’s happening around you.

There are still a few things that need work. NVGs could be better, they feel limited and have some strange visual flares, but I'm sure that will be worked out. Oh yeah.. the STASH SORTING button! And the fact that quests now share progress across squads makes playing with friends a lot smoother! Great quality of life additions.

This update shows real progress. Still very much in Early Access, but it’s steadily growing into something really solid.
