As of launch, the current version of the OpenFIRE light gun firmware does not work with the three gun games in this collection. When the gun is pointing at the screen, the crosshair is locked to the bottom-right corner of the screen, rendering 75% of this collection unplayable with a light gun. Mouse controls still work as expected, however. This review will be updated if this severe control issue is corrected.

Aside from that, the menu UX is bizarrely difficult. The only assistance for navigating menus with a keyboard is a diagram at startup showing a mapping of keys to controller buttons shown for 1 second, with no means to remap them afterward. The button legends on the bottom of the screen do not have keyboard equivalents, and the mouse cannot be used in the menus at any point except to test mouse controls deep in the controller configuration. For anyone hoping to play the gun games without a controller plugged in, reaching that point is more difficult than it should be.

I bought this the minute I saw it just to play Dawn of Sorrow. In case there was any doubt, M2 is still the undisputed champion in retro game emulation. No input lag or any other common concern with these retro ports, and there's a good amount of new stuff in the gallery. I wasn't sure about button strings for the Magic Seals, but they're actually kind of satisfying to do once you memorize them. You will absolutely want to spend extra time in the practice menu to learn the strings, but if you fail them in boss fights, you get more assistance from the game each time.

I also tried out Haunted Castle Revisited. It is not a remake of the arcade game like it advertises. It's actually Castlevania Rebirth 2, to the point that it plays nothing like Haunted Castle. If you happen to be good at the arcade game, none of your skills will adapt here. It just makes me yearn for proper re-releases of the other Rebirth games, since M2 were given an opportunity to make a brand new one here.

The words "Rendered in the original native 320x240 resolution of the classics" in the description is the sole reason I bought this game. This is the most Sega Saturn pixel art game I've seen all year. If you have the capability to play PC games on CRT, set the image scale to 1x to get a 240p image and center the window in your CRT.

I had high expectations for the first shmup from a company that has only ever made Metroidvanias before, and they were all fulfilled. Team Ladybug should just never do early access ever again, because when they're not under pressure to release regular incomplete builds, their games actually feel complete once it's out.

This is a 2-loop game, and getting 2-All is mandatory for a proper 1CC for reasons that become clear after the first loop is done. Also, there's a hilarious cameo at the end of stage 5 that will probably give shmup veterans a real shock. For everyone else, it's got all of Team Ladybug's trademark setpieces from their previous games, perfectly adapted to the shmup genre.

Early Access Review
This game is made by someone who knows how fighting games work, and how to hide it so that that knowledge can be used against you. It is the AP test of fighting game fundamentals; it subverts your expectations of how the genre works so hard that only those with the strongest knowledge of fundamentals will win.

Lesson learned: Never buy indie games on Steam in January, because that's when Nintendo holds their indie game reveal shows.

Note: I was thinking really hard on whether to give this a yes or no review based on how cheated I felt that I played this one day before they announced the Switch version, a month after they said it was extremely unlikely, so I just tossed a coin and let that decide.

As one of the earliest Kickstarter backers, I had quite the set of expectations with La-Mulana 2. 21 hours later, it feels like playing La-Mulana 1 for the first time. Which is exactly what I wanted from it.

Your enjoyment of this game will depend solely on how much you enjoy pipe-based puzzles and sokoban. If you like at least one of those, this game has something for you.

Harrier doesn't say "You're doing great!" at the end of each zone. 0/10.
